so i decided to throw down and hook my truck up finally, was thinking 4 8inch subs (jbl w3's) in the back with a 4 channel 1k amp (alpine) to them. then doing the front and rear speakers was thinking focal's but hadn't decided yet. any suggestions on speakers and thoughts overall?

Getting a lot of volume that responds well to the quick kicks you'll find in rock and metal, 4 8s will do pretty well. From what I've heard out of JL (I'm assuming that's what you meant), you pay more for the name that you get out of the speaker. I'm a big fan of Memphis Audio personally. Next time we have a meet or you're in the Bellevue area, let me know, and you can listen to my two 10s.
Focal makes excellent speakers from what I've read, but I've never actually heard them. My components are all Kenwood eXcelon series, and they sound just fine. The reason I went with those is that they fit in the stock (Z) locations without any modifications. The nicest component speakers I've ever listened to were Morel, which were absolutely amazing, but you'll pay for it.

I'm just running a small setup, a 10" Image Dynamics sub with a JL 500/1. Good enough for me, but I love how clean the sub is, and loud enough for me. Better than the Eclipse ti sub I had in the G before as welll as the JL W3v2 I had in there before that. I hear really good things about Elemental Designs subs too.
I've got Focal's all the way around in my Z and I listen to Angry White Boy music (rock/metal).
I've still got the gain turned down on the tweets, but they're not nearly as bright as a lot of other speakers and *very* smooth.
I'd do the Focal's again in a heartbeat if I were doing another vehicle.

its an 06 silverado crew cab, doing a fiberglass box for the 4 8's behind the rear seat, was contemplating putting another 2 under it as well and stacking the 2 amps under the middle seat not sure yet tho, def going with the morels for the front speakers prolly run the cheaper focals for the rear since i wont be riding in the back seat

My just bought the latter to be powered by an Eclipse M1000, so I should have an answer for you in a week or two.

after i got a deck in my car finally (thanks eric) I absolutely love my RE SX series 10's with a JL 1000/1 hooked up to them. If you thought my stereo was loud before...you haven't heard anything. For speakers I run the older MB Quart QSD series 6.5's all the way around. They sound great, but definately need me to hook an amp up to them.
