Highway 87N to 280 split.
I've been wondering this for a while...but I thought I'd ask to see if anyone actually knew...
Anyone know what the hell they are doing with the 87N to 280 split? I used to enjoy the 2 lane fun going from 87N to 280N @ 80mph....now it merges from 2 lanes to 1
Just a random topic...

87N -> 280N has always been 2->1 at the end of the curve. I know what you mean about the thrill ... it's turning so fast about midway through that I feel like the Z's not gonna make it, so I have to put my other hand on the steering wheel as well.

hehe yea...it's just a fun little stretch...nothing more.
You're right...it always merged into 1 lane at the end of the curve... but now it merges into 1 lane before the curve and they put a stupid wall up where the second lane used to be...
meh...

Oh yeah, I think that's right, cuz there was some construction equipment there the last time I used that junction back at the end of December. I wonder if they realize how much they're hurting commuters by forcing them to drive slow instead of letting drivers have a place to practicing finding the line when it's late and nobody's out.

LOL!
Guess we have to take our line finding elsewhere now...

True true...
The South SJ area gots a bunch of fun stuff for us...
-blossom hill (heading east) to 85N loop.
-Cottle Rd. to 85N "s-turn" onramp.
-blossom hill (eastward) to 101N loop.
-Almaden to 85N loop.

Ahh! Bailey on the long straight going up to the twisty hill and on to Uvas/Mckean. I hope they are planning to redo that straight and make it flat and smooth now that the Bailey exit off of 101 is in.
OH! And how about 87S onto 85N?

oy bailey...my buddy flipped his road race civic there lol....took it too hard on his first time seeing the track....his rear end slipped in some sand and hit a big rock...
haha 87S to 85N is not bad. One night i was on that turn and there was water all over the lanes mid-curve (outta nowhere)!! Scared the hell outta me... I totally thought I was gonna hydroplane.
Another good one is 17S to 85S gotta love roaring through that tunnel. (Blowing off with my TT is fun too as it echoes for days through there haha).

don't start w/ me and perfect drag strips haha...
I'm primarily a "straight-line" kinda guy I can list these stretches out for days

perfect drag strip... down lafayette St. in Santa Clara.
just make sure you have your radar detector on and someone scoping out the stretch for you.
my personal favorite loop is the on/off ramp to 101 on Montegue/San Tomas. You can just do cambered right hand turns all night long. Just make sure you go during really late night or else you'll just be stuck in traffic

I'm a big bends kinda guy (don't care much for diminishing-radius turns). If I had my druthers, there would be a race from Landess at the foot of Mt. Hamilton all the way to where it finally becomes Camden, in Campbell.

more like a top-speed stretch
I've seen an STI lose it on the Montague to 880N loop before. He entered the highway *** backwards and flew across the first two lanes where he came to a halt sideways (ready to be T-boned by oncoming traffic). He was very very very very fortunate no one hit him (it was 2AM, but still....it's a highway we're talking about here!). I guess that AWD couldn't help his *** that night....
What's worse is that after the incident....5 minutes later...mr. smart guy in an STI does a fly-by on everyone @ 110+ mph in the fast lane of 880. I guess he figured he was invincible.
