FYI: "false" K band detections on the highway (esp. 280 between SJ and SF)
About a month or so ago, I drove up to SF via 280 and started noticing a whole bunch of intermittent K band detections MANY times but never saw any cops. Partly cuz of that, I take 101 instead...
A coworker told me about Mr. Roadshow's column which I finally found and it has this info:

Interesting... When I look at the above URL, I see there are a TON of sensors on 280N. That must explain it. Only prob is, one has to get really accustomed to where they are to be able to distinguish these from cops w/radar.

Q. Can you identify these new camera-like devices are that are mounted on light poles and exit signs on 280 between highways 85 and 92? They are white, with something that looks like a solar panel attached, and were installed about a month ago. My radar detector often goes berserk when I get near one, but they don't always seem to be active.

A. You are seeing … and hearing … radar-type devices that have been installed along Highway 17 and other area freeways by SpeedInfo, a Cupertino-based company that forged a deal with Caltrans to place their devices in areas where there are gaps in the current 511 road reporting system. This system does not interfere with police radar, but can trigger radar detectors. It measures average traffic speed in all directions but does not measure individual cars. Caltrans will receive data from Speed- Info free of charge for a year, using it to update the 511 system. SpeedInfo will install up to 300 devices along Bay Area freeways, along Highway 101 south of San Jose to Hollister, Interstate 680 north of Benicia, I-780 between Benicia and Vallejo, I-980 in downtown Oakland, Highway 24 between Oakland and Walnut Creek, 101 north of Novato and parts of I-580 580 and Route 4. It's already in place on much of I-280. Click on http://traffic.speedinfo.com/District4Sensors/ for more information.

CHP uses Ka band and laser exclusively so X band can be turned off in California. City cops use mostly K band and some Ka band for traffic stops. You can go here to learn about muting those K band drones automatically with your V1.

No radar detector including the V1 can tell the difference between X or K band false alarms from motion sensors on doors and drones and real police X and K band radar because they all operate on the same frequencies.
Good luck with changing your V1's settings!

my K band has been getting pegged on my way down to SJ from Fmt... up 880 to SF... All this started recently 2-3 month!
I thought my V1 is messed up or some wiring problem... the warning has been inconsistent...
I think this explains it... and the POP detection probably will not sove this problem...
Thanks! Now just unplug the darn thing?

Give them time and the radar detectors will no doubt come up with something I would think. They always do. I use the Passport 8500 X50 (2 of them-one for each car) and they do free upgrades, which I get for 3 years, took the extended coverage. Already I've had a free update on one of them. Now I'm sending in the other one. The only other thing is the Phazer, which wipes/destroys the ability of radar or laser to track a reading on your car. They're illegal in some states like CA, and VA. But that's only if you're caught with it of course. Other than that, it's simply look at the speed limit sign.
I've had the same problem with my V1. I get random full strength hits that last about 2 second then die out instantly. I've had it happen on the 280 and also on 580 coming over Altamont pass.
It looks like in the past week or so they just installed a TON on 101 between Mountain View and SF.
I got TONs of those false K band detections between there today in both directions along w/some on 85 south of Mountain View. It's so bad on 101 that it feel like my radar detector is going off for more than 1/2 of the drive.
The worst part is that they feel like real detections from a cop: building in strength gradually until reaching max and staying there, then fading.
I'm not going to disable K band since it is used elsewhere and well, for all I know, the CHP could sneak in some K band guns eventually.
