I have a few questions that might help us to help you.
What do you and your girlfriend do for a living?
Any idea about where you want to live?
Just for conversation sake, why?

well shes from dixon and some of my family lives in sac. her parents live here in vegas with her and they are moving to alameda and she wont have anyone left here except me, so i decided what the hell i can always use a change.
i work valet at a casino currently but i am x military (firefighter Air Force) i have worked as an auto damage adjuster for an insurance company and other little things when i was younger.
my gf has always been in the service industry ( a server at Chilies for a while in dixon)
i'm a quick learner and can really do just about anything always graduate at the top of my class. i just finished my EMT-B at the local comm coll. i would have to get my EMT-I before anyone would hire me but they dont make hardly any money. around 9.50 hour here to save peoples lives. i like the job but cant live on the pay

oh i'm not saying imake 9.5 an hour thats just what emt's make down here and if its anything close to that up there than there is no reason to finish my school for that.
not sure how firefighting works up there, here it is really hard to get in almost like trying to be senator or something, very political and you have to know people. i guess i should find out about it up there but it just seems like more of a pain here than what it's worth.

If you live in Sacramento, you can probably survive off a crappy salary. If you live in the Bay Area, it's going to be at least 2000 a month for like a 2 bedroom apt that is alright and it will not be in SF but a city outside of it. You can probably find a place like that in Daly City, Burlingame, Redwood City, Menlo Park. Those are just examples.
Staying in Vegas isn't an option? Goodluck wherever you go though.

my wife and I are moving into a new 3 bed room house and we were thinking about renting a room about for like 500 bucks a month, but probably wont work with you and your girl...
look on craigslist, should be plenty of listings for rooms for rent, though not sure if most of them allow couples

i know there are tons of openings in law enforcement. easier to become a cop than a firefighter.
sfpd starts at 65k (at least thats what it says on the bus billboards) and i know oakland pd is hiring as well.
check it out.

I'm pretty sure EMT's make more money in the bay than the 9.50 and hour... Cops are pushing 80 - 100K depending on overtime (just did a couple of mortgages for some cops). Firefighters make good money too because of overtime as well.
If you want to stay in the service industry, hotels etc... you need to be in SF to make more $ because of all the tourists and conference events.
Keep in mind, the further you move from the bay, the cost of living will be less however the amount you are paid will also decrease.
Good luck.
