As for the bands they have FRS and GMRS. FRS is the old school stuff, line of sight for about 2 miles most of them..

GMRS is the new stuff, and they can go up to 30 miles (line of sight as well). But usually they dont go that far, usually considerably less than that actually but they CAN i guess...if your in the desert with nothing blocking you....or maybe on water....
