Recap of Summers End Run 2011

Weather was fantastic, great people and a route to end the summer. Food was up the expectations, a few glitches which come with every large group. Overall they received an A-. Highway 20 from Willits to Fort Bragg had enough twists and switchbacks to keep even the most experienced drivers alert. The drive along Pacific Coast Highway 1 down and thru Mendocino kept us together in one group approaching the bridge where two photographers were waiting to snap off several photos as the parade of cars crossed over. Then several down hill coastal switchbacks with great back drops of the ocean made for some great rolling photos.

Approaching the dark road ahead was Navarro River Redwoods, which was like something out of Jurassic Park. It was taken very easy thru this stretch of road to take in all the beauty the forest has to offer. Dropped into Anderson Valley where the vineyards are dotted along the sweeping highway onto Roederer Estates which was very upscale and stylish with all the cars lined up along the hillside of vineyards and southward was a great view of the Anderson Valley that stretches for miles.

After cool refreshments provided by Pete & Karen and some cookies from Ken and Mary tucked away in the boot from the morning send off, we said our farewells and headed back on the highway for another 40 miles of pure adrenaline back roads twisting thru to Highway 101. Everyone parted their own way back home and we followed Steve and Simon for some time before we also turned off towards Sacramento.

The Summers End Run was an appropriate title for the last run of the summer before we headed back to work and the kids back to school, one last fling before back to the grind. Thanks to all that participated, I made a lot of new friends and caught up on times with old friends. Until we meets again, keep all fours on the road and the pedal to the metal.

I would like to thank the following people for helping out. Pete and Karen created a spreadsheet for the lunch menu. They also collected all of the menus. Registration was assisted by Cindy & Jim. Hal for being tail gunner, the last person, but the most important, he is the glue that keeps everything smooth. His idea to split up the 30 cars into groups of 6 made Hwy 20 much more enjoyable.

Photo links will follow as soon as I sort them and upload to a web server. Some have already provided photo links which I will email more links as they become available.

In the meantime some have already posted their fantastic photos, so enjoy these and more to come.

Default Itinerary & Lunch menu

Below is the itinerary and lunch menu for participants to preview before the day of the Run. Both will be handed out on Sat at the main staging area in Petaluma along with

the map.

Note: don’t be sticker shocked at the prices on the menu, the underlined (Entries & Sandwiches) have everything worked into the price. What you see is the total of what you

pay (gratuity + tax+ beverage). The non underlined (Appetizers & Soups) do not have gratuity, tax and beverage and those items will have the gratuity + tax added at the

register.

The wine list is on the website for your review. Note there is a $6 tasting fee which will be placed towards the purchase of a bottle of wine. It’s well worth it just for

the relaxation and hospitality Roederer Estate is providing for such a large car group. Please try to patronage the winery even if you do not purchase a bottle or two, the $6

will cover their cost as they usually do not allow car clubs to come thru. One of our participants (Pete & Karen) has been so kind to provide 2 cases of water and took it up

the Roederer last Saturday and they are storing it in their refrigerator for us. We may need to get some more water to bring along for our relaxation stop at Roederer

Estate.

lol you're not counting the 1.5 hours to get to the starting point, and then 2-2.5 back from the end point. Just the actual scheduled run is supposed to be around 6 hours. Last time even that was longer but was due to some longer than expected photo stops and lunch went way longer than it should have.

You're thinking of a different run. Cache creek is July, this is the August one that goes out to Ft. Bragg on the coast and back through the redwoods.

Don't have to be a Zonc member to attend. Fresh: Maybe we need a dry run from Willits to FB to make sure your new clutch is broke in properly...Hehe!

Hey foks, thanks for filling in people on the details. This is the long run of the year for people coming from Sacramento. I Would suggest to overnight it somewhere along Highway 101 as we did not get back to Roseville until 12:30 am. Left in the morning at 6:30 am.

I am working very hard to trim down the run but will keep the same route. So how is this possible? To start with we will cut down the time at the stops picking up people for the caravan to main staging area in Petaluma. See #1-3 below.

1)West Sac stop will be 15 min
2) Fairfield stop 15 min
3) Main staging area -Petaluma 30 min tops
4) We will be cutting out the stop at Hopland (one restroom for 35 people took way too long) and will make the stop at Burger King in Willits.
5) Lunch at Fort Bragg 1.5 hrs tops (depends on how fast the food comes out) Last year we had a birthday celebration which added time.
6) Photo shoot at the cliffs in Fort Bragg (thinking of cutting it out all together).
7) Will keep the famous bridge shot just south of Mendocino (hopefully our two photographers from the North will be going ...hint...hint...Eric and Eric.
8) The stop at the (new for this year) Roederer Estate vineyard will be cut down to 1 hr max.
9) No potty break at the gas station along 128 after Roederer Estate vineyard as it was an unexpected stop last year and cost us 30 min.

The Run will end at Highway 128 and Hwy 101 (Cloverdale).

Dinner is optional but I imagine most will want to scoot home. Sacramento people, I would highly suggest spending the night along Hwy 101. We are!

I have to crunch some numbers on the times and see what I come up with for an estimated travel time.

Stay tuned and thanks for getting this thread going. Aug 13 is only one month away. I have alot of work between now and with this weekends run (Brunch Casino Run) only three days away.

Thanks
Curtis

Yeah, this run was long, but fun. I'm working that Sat, but I'll see if I could trade that day with someone.

Anyone have any recommendations for a hotel at the end? The GF is thinking of coming on this one, though she wants to peel off in Ft. Bragg because she wants to stay there if we stay overnight. I'm trying to convince her otherwise cause that's like 1/2 the run grrrrrr.
