Default Mounting Depth problem with front speakers

Hi all...

So, I am in the market for a new component set up front, and am running into a wall.

Originally, I tried to install a set of Alpine SPR-176A 6.5" comps, and they seemed to be too DEEP, and hit the window. I am using the stock Clarion baskets as spacers.

I settled for a quick fix with these Infinity Reference 6.5" components, that had a mount depth of 2.25". They seemed to fit fine.

Now, shopping for new speakers with a little more depth, and not as harsh as the Infinity ... I can't seem to see how all of you are installing these speakers you reccomend.

I have looked at Diamond Audio, Focal, CDT, etc... and they all seem to be almost 3" in depth, and they would definatly hit my window.

Any suggestions? Custom spacer? Anyone have pics of their install?

***Please don't move this to the audio forum... no one in there really knows anything... wanted to see if anyone local had any aftermarket speakers, or problems with their installs***

From what I've read, people are using spacers so that their speakers are not mounted as deep. I've seen people make their own, but supposedly you should be able to buy them at audio shops as well.

here's a pic of how my installer mounted the focal speakers in the front and rear quarter panel.

They cut out the stock speakers from their baffles and used those to mount the focals.

the 165kp have a 85 mm (3.33") magnet

pictures are worth 1000 words...

note: i drive a g35 coupe...so the door space behind the panel may be a little bit different.

drsifu, where did you get your installation done?

Nice speakers btw, I'm planning on going w/ Focal myself. What kind of amp do you have driving them?

As stated originally, I *AM* using spacers, and was still running into problems hitting the window. Now you see why I am perplexed!

I'll see if I can take some pics of how my speaker is sitting. Maybe I missed a step... but its driving me crazy... makes me think I can't get any different speakers, cause all the "good" ones have a deep mounting depth.

2004Z : Custom Audio in Mountain View. Come down on Tuesdays afternoon around 3-4 pm and you'll see me hanging around the shop. It's a mom and pop shop, nothing like those big name places such as Sound Innovations. I could introduce you to the owner and try to get you a decent deal. They are an authorized Focal /Memphis/Pioneer/JVC dealer. I have a Memphis 16-MC3004 amp running my speakers. I'm running the 165CV in the rear quarter panel. PM me if you want details.

Neurosis: I know you said you used the Clarion baskets..I was hoping the picture would help you. Maybe you had them mounted differently.

I did the same as sal1 but had trouble getting the grill to fit back on perfect.

I went to Big Al and you gotta swear by his work. He had to make custom spacers for my Lotus fronts and everything fits perfectly. Audiomobile does probably the cleanest installs I've seen. Plus everyone knows that Big Al wouldn't do anything on our cars w/o using his as the guinea pig first.
