Default who's changed out their Trans and Diff fluids?

... and what brands did you use? Did you notice any difference, good or bad?

I have been reading about the Royal Purple 70w90 , in both Trans and Diff ... with decent reviews.

I used 4 qts in the tranny, and 1 1/2 quart for the diff when I changed mine. Just remember to use GL-4 and not GL-5 in the transmission to prevent excessive syncho wear.

Don't forget to buy 4 new crush washers to replace the fill plug and drain plug on both tranny and diff.

I like RP, but I have heard AMSOIL is really good too. There are alot of threads on this topic.

As to the fluid amounts, I put 1.5 qts in the diff and 3.25 qts. in the tranny. Make sure you don't overfill.

I noticed a huge difference. I did this back when I was living in a cold climate. I also noticed alot of metal shavings in the tranny pan when I did the fluid swap. You will fel better after doing this simple mod.

i used Redline MT-90 for my manual tranny and 75W-90 for my differential. great stuff.

you can't overfill these fluids. you're suppose to fill up to your fill-line. when it begins to pour out, stop adding and let the excess drain out before you put the plug back.

i didn't replace the crush washer, no leaks.

i have no comment on the auto transmission fluid.

Argh ... I can't find anywhere that carries Royal Purple around here. Are there good online retailers for stuff like this?

edit - Wow, I used the wonderful "search" button on top, and came up with this - http://www.pitstopusa.com/detail.aspx?ID=5150 ($6.88 / qt + shipping)

I know you're not supposed to reuse the same crush washer for the tranny and diff, but the crush washers for them are very different from the ones you use for the oil pan and seem to hold up more than one use. I reused mine, but haven't encountered any problems. I intend to replace them when I change out the fluids again (I figure I shouldn't push my luck).

I haven't gotten around to changing the fluids yet on my new Z but on my last car I used both mobile1 and redline. I read an independent study once on the s2k boards where a guy used them both for a certain amt of time and sent them off for analysis and the mobil1 was supposedly better.

I changed my Tranny fluid to Redline with a mix of 2 quarts MT-90 and 2 quarts MTL. I didn't notice much of a difference in the shifting. It might be a little smother, but not enough to really recommend.

I changed my Diff fluid to Redline 75W-90 with a tube of Sta-lube. This made a HUGE difference!! I have the Nismo GT LSD, and it was really noisy. It sounded like I had a popcorn maker sitting in the back of my car. The diff wouldn't engage smoothly at all. After the change, there is still a little noise, but only for about a minute or 2. It's a lot smoother, and can really feel the diff working.

FYI, Stevens Creek Toyota carries Royal Purple oil. They don’t stock the Tranny / Diff oils, but can order them I believe, but might need to order it by the case.

If you haven't ordered, I remember seeing RP at a Shade Darker.

All the manual shows is for them to be inspected @ 45k and 60k miles or 36 & 48 months. They never talk about replacement. General rule of thumb is every 50k.
