Hey guys,
We just got our 05 4-runner shipped to HI (Oahu), from Texas we has 30 days to get it registered (military). Yesterday we went to firestone to get an safety inspection but they said our window tint was too dark...what da hell?...its dam near factory tint. In Texas its legal. Anyways, is there a shop we can go too in the Aeia/pear harbor/pearl city area and get it done at that might be a little more LENIENT AND FLEXABLE WITH DA TINT. Yeah, maybe slip a couple of dollars. When my Z gets shipped ...Ima have to go the same shop! mine is the same shade as the SUV....both are silver cars with the titanium type shade tint. Again, its state legal in texas. And texas is real strict on the Tint belive me! Sure hate to peel off the tint on both the SUV and the Z it was kind expensive, plus it looks good.
Oh, and the could you guys recommend a good Airconditioning shop for a 1992 Honda civic I bought while I was there in June. The AC just went out, and it uses the freon system not the new oil system. Yeah, I could get it done and do it myself when i return in Aug but, until then, the gas on the for the 4-runner is gonna be a b**** so we'd rather use the civic for economy purposes. Any suggestions, for a lenient inspection shop and AC auto repair center that could help us in the area?

Might be a little tough. There's been an overall crack down on the tint the past few years. The safety inspection station can loose their license if they get caught.
What kind of "near stock" tint are you running?

Its the silver titanium type tint. You can almost see thru it. But dark enough at an angle. The Suv and my Z is has same color and tint. Within Requlation in Texas.
Too dark for HI, I can tell just by looking right now. Take a look at mine, they are HI state max tint. I forgot the numbers off hand but they out right refused to go darker.
You can try and get a shop to get you hooked up but .... trouble

OH my GOD!!!!!!!!! you have tint? I dont see any? if that is legal in HI, then I might as well not have any at all. I dont understand, being that HI is hot 24/7 you think the tint could be darker. Texas is hot as hell during summer months, and for Texas ..what I have is light as hell. See your car...I dont think I got a chance in Hell.
silk - what % is on the car? i had the titanium type on my maxima and it was at 35% wich is the lowest legal you can go. i have 20% on my sides and 5% on the back on my Z now. its illegal but here on maui the shop that did the tints also does safety checks and there are waay more here that wont even care. just as long as your blinkers, wipers, headlights, and seatbelt works the guy won't even care. he has pre-checked off safety papers already made out.
Hawaii tint law is 35% for the car, anything darker than that is illegal. Stations should be using a light meter to gauge light transmission (although I have yet to see one that used one).
I just went legal to prevent any drama when I do my safety checks.

After countless ours and hundreds of posts, yeah I pick up on a few things here and there when I'm not busy typing.
On topic....
So yeah your gonna get thrown into the recon system right out of the gate. Your body kit... yeah that will put you in there, they gotta get the $$$ worth from your mods, hope you were able to retain your front bumper brace. they check, or at least thats what I hear from a few people I know that got thrown in that system.

FYI - Unless you get a recon, I'd suggest you avoid cruising through Waikiki. I've heard of guys getting a bunch of tickets by the officers there.
Good info but a little out of date. I think last year they finaly revised the safety and recon stuff. here is a link on the forumshawaii to the section http://www.forumshawaii(DOT)net/vbb/...ety+inspection
So it wont be censored, so yeah just take out the (DOT) and put the . in, copy, paste, and your in business.
EDIT: Hey I went through all the new stuff, they left the '86 crap for a base and just amended several sections. Which means no good for us. You will have some recone guys at the station who will pick and choose what sections to follow based on many thing (not getting into the whole Howley thing) but the average joe blow wont know the recon well enough to fight it.
We realy need to find a place that distributes them, I had a number earlier this year but I lost it. I'll ask arround forums hawaii.
BTW: Silk if you can get on there, it takes for ever, there is some good info on how hawaii works motorvehicle wise.
DING DING DING DING
We have a winner!!
Copies of Hawaii Recon rules are available for $1.25 at the Department of Transportation's Motor Vehicle Safety Office at Dillingham Plaza, 1505 Dillingham Boulevard, room 214. Call 832-5825.
