Default Digital Camera recommendations ...HELP

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I need to find a good quality digital camera that is both affordable and performs well. My girlfriend was gonna get me the x360 but since it is next to impossible to get I decided on a digital camera. I am looking for a camera that takes good pics on low light conditions and has more features than just point and click. So far I am leaning on the Canon PowerShot S2 IS. So any any of you chaps have any ideas please post your picks for camera's. I don't want to pick something that's costs around $1000 but somewhere around $500 or less that takes awesome pics.....Please help I only have a few weeks to decide on something....

If you are looking for a simple point and shoot I would recommend any Canon.

If you are looking to control the f-stop, shutter timing, etc... then tell your gf to get you a gift certificate for the first $500 and pay for a good SLR yourself. IMO, your normal point and shoot cameras SUCK if you are looking to shoot manually.

For low light shots you'll need a tripod.

Pretty much any camera you get will have a shutter time priority option to help out with good night pics as well.

Are you looking for a certain MegaPixel? Do you have any other preferences??

Pixels is important but I have seen awesome 4MP take awesome shots. I have a older cam which takes horrible night pics in addition any shadows appear black. I guess something around 5MP but something that works well in low light conditions....

A 5MP camera can reproduce the same quality 8x10 picture as a 35mm.

I have a Canon A95 Powershot and LOVE it!

You just described the Fuji F10. This camera is unique in the digital point and shoot world. It has a larger CCD so the pixels have a larger pitch - this means the camera works better in low light conditions than any other small digital point and shoot at any price. I just picked one up on the recommendatioon of a friend who is a professional photographer and Im shocked at how good this stupid little camera is. You can shoot indoors in low light without flash and without a tripod and get well lit low noise pictures. Be careful though - this is the only Fuji to use this larger CCD. Oh yeah, NO Canon, Nikon or Olympus point and shoot will even come close to this cameras low light / indoor performance. They all use small CCDs with smaller pixels and end up yielding noisy / blurry shots in low light conditions. When it comes to digicams more pixels does not mean better. The fuji has 6 and that's plenty. In fact, in the point and shoot world more pixels means even smaller pixels resulting in poorer low light performance and clipping in high light conditions.

To put all of this in context my main camera is a digital SLR and this is the first point and shoot that actually impresses me. And you can pick it up at your local Target for $350.

Me, I'm in the market as well, heres my list: My prize range is $200 - $400.

These are the "froogle" prizes.

Samsung digimax V800: $349.00 / 8.0 mega pixel / 2.5" lcd screen / 3x zoom
http://www.samsungcamera.com/product...520&cat_uid=10

Casio EX-Z750: $330.00 / 7.2 mega pixel / 2.5" lcd screen / 3x zoom
http://www.casio.com/index.cfm?fusea...duct=EX%2DZ750

Cannon powershot S80 $349.00 / 8.0 mega pixel / 2.5 lcd screen / 3.6x zoom
http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/con...&modelid=12074

I don't know what your price range or what you're looking for but I hope this help. so far I found the best price to be on Froogle. Good luck and let me know if you find a better deal.

Thanks for the recommendation, I have an Olympus c750 that I like except for low light situations when it becomes really slow focusing and the images are noisy. One question: Does the proprietary li-ion charge in the camera or out? I hate it when I can't charge a battery without tying up the camera.
Thanks

If you want to take night photos, make sure you check the exposure time. A lot of small cameras only have a 1 sec shutter speed which is not long enough.

Digital Photography Camera Reviews

Have a look at this web site. The guys reviews are spot-on accurate. Look for his full reviews and you'll find details on how well they do in low light situations - digital cameras can change the gain on their sensors. You're looking for a camera with good 800 and 1600 ASA response.

Use the buyer's guide to narrow your selelction and to possibly open your eyes to cameras that might not have made your radar.

I just bought a Fuji Finepix e550 for my son for Christmas. It is highly rated by Consumer Reports. I paid $313 at Buydig.com. That included a 128 MB memory card.
