SLR or dSLR? If dSLR, you won't get very far with that budget. The cost of the body is only a small amount you'll spend in gear. Lenses and accessories quickly add up. You'll easily spend 3-4x in glass to the cost of the body.

If $600 is your budget, you could get by with a Canon 350D with a kit lens; that's pretty much it. It doesn't leave you much for accessories such as tripods, external flash, memory cards, filters, camera bags, extra batteries, better glass, etc.

if you don't want to spend alot of money, why not just pick up a regular digital camera? Get a decent one that is 8MP and you'll be good.

Sounds like you're better off with a Canon S2 IS or Canon S3 IS instead of a dSLR.

If a DSLR is what you want, then your price will not land you one that would be any better than a digital point-and-shoot. In fact, the latter would be much better in overall functionality as the very best sell for around $400. I would strongly recommend looking into a Canon PowerShot with full manual control. The 540 and 620 are both terriffic models.

Get a DSLR when you can afford a quality one. That, at least, would be my honest advice.

I'm a fan of my Digital Rebel XT.

It comes in a kit for about 1,000ish when i got it. May be a lil bit cheaper now.

I have the XT. Very easy. Not much more difficult than an advanced P&S.

Though I'd probably try to get a used XT and save $300-$400. You won't be able to tell the difference if it's your first DSLR.

for the budget, Canon Digital Rebel XTi is an excellent choice. Go for it.

Remember to post picture when you get your new cam.
