The only thing I don't like about the D40/D40X is that you are limited to lenses. you can only use lenses for digital camera versus the other cameras like my D70s I can use any Nikon Lens. I'm not sure about Canons XT or XTi, but if you can use any lens on those, I would look into them. Or try to find a Nikon D80

the lense limitation is the only real drawback, but other than that, it is a great little camera.

and you can get some inexpensive lenses that will work, and can be used with other body's when/if you upgrade

however, buy the D40, not the D40x. the advantages of the X are slim, and especially for a beginner the extra 4 mp are far from neccisary . might as well save that cash, or invest it in the package with the D40 and the extra lens

then definitly look at the regular D40 kit with the extra zoom lens.

there is no need to bother with the D40X, youre just spending money that could be spent more wisely

I have the D40 and I LOVE it.... I agree with the above... No need for the D40X whatsoever!! Save the $ and get the 55-200mm lense with the D40 as well and dont look back!

You will love it!

i say get the 70-300mm VR lens

i was between the 55-200 and this lens, i just went and played with both in the store today, and i am more than sold on the 70-300. it is a much faster lens, has an automatic with manual over-ride mode (no more switching between modes!! ), and the extra zoom is oh so nice .

i waaaaaaant it!! (and the 50mm F1.8 lens )
