I've been getting into photography lately but cant do much with a point and shoot HP 6.1 camera. I want to go SLR and was thinkin about the D50 w/18-55 lens. I love to take pics of my car but also take pics of scenery and what not. Would this be a good overall setup for a beginner like myself? Thanks for all the great info.

Nikon has superior super wide angle lenses when compared to Canon, but Canon has superior telephoto lenses. Landscape = super wide angle. Sports/action = telephoto. Each brand has its own strengths and weaknesses. Regardless of which you choose, you'll appreciate the image quality over a point and shoot camera once you learn all of the proper settings, lighting, and gear that is involved. But........... be ready to invest up front for good gear. Don't forget the accessory items, such as memory card(s), external flash, tripod legs, tripod head, additional lenses, filters, camera bag, extra battery(batteries), etc.

Here are a few shots I took last night of a potential new model. Her twin sister is on vacation so I'll be doing another photoshoot next week, then I'll do another with both of them together. Twins ftw!
She's going to see the pics tonight so I want her feedback as to which post processing she prefers, the more natural look (#1) or the Maxim-overly-processed-look (#2).

It costs a little bit more but you'll thank us later once you own the D50 for a few months and decide to sell it for the D70s. The extra dial on the D70s makes it much easier to do on the fly adjustments. For most people starting out, this doesn't make much of a difference but once you move out of the amateur phase, you'll grow to hate the controls on the D50 (for the Canon guys, the 350D) and you will appreciate the ergonomics of the D70s (10D/20D/30D for the Canon crew).
I agree...
I have a Rebel XT (350D), and I loved it, until I started working for a studio a couple of weeks ago, and now it feels too puny. If you have the money, go for one of the big boys, whether it's Nikon or Canon. You'll be glad you did.

Honestly ... when I am on a comp that has no good resize software ... I use MS Paint
Yes I lose some detail and color ... but the sharpness isn't lost (IMO the biggest prob on internet pics)

Ouch!
It's to mount my scope onto my rifle. Pics of rifle(s) later.
edit - used about 7 pieces of 100# paper to create my little white box. then used my small desk lamp for light. ghetto setup but it worked.
