Damn James, now you're making me want to shell out for the 24-70mm lens now too...

I have the 17-85mm IS don't think it a bad lense. I agree it isn't the sharpest when at its widest and like most lenses it should be stopped down a touch to keep it at its best, but then you will get some nice, sharp shots out of it. I honestly don't use it that much, though, b/c I default to using primes alot. When I have some excess cash that I don't feel could be better spent elsewhere, this will probably be replaced in my bag.
I don't have any experience with the 50 f1.8, but from what I hear you won't want to use it wide open to get the sharpest results. Also, the O.O.F. areas behind the subject (bokeh) when using the 50 f1.8 sometimes suffer from a slightly unpleasant effect. These are little problems that are well within reason considering the pricetag on the lense and the sharp images you will get. I have the 50 f1.4 (approx $400) and it gets rid of these minor problems), but you have to decide if it is worth it or not.
If you are looking for a longer telephoto, I would suggest checking out the Cannon 70-200mm f4.0 for a relatively inexpensive L-series. Not great in low light, but image and build quality is great.
I hope this has helped at least a little...

I always assumed this about "primes" because I've seen some folks on SLR forums having these types of lenses as their primes even though they are technically telephotos as well. I'm a newb at this so I maybe getting the terms mixed up. Is this correct to assume?
Wide Angle = >35mm
Prime = 35mm-55mm
Telephoto (mid range) = 55mm-100mm (which I mention some use as their primes)
Telephoto (long range) = <100mm

Primes can be of any length, as long as they don't zoom at all. Cannon makes a HUGE list of prime lenses, ranging from wide, around 14mm to rediculously long...1200 mm (costing around $75,000 each).
How often a photographer uses a lense has no bearing on weather or not it is in fact a prime lense.
Check out some of the basic info in this thread and the two top links within it... it will sort out some of your lense questions.

Yeah... what I love about primes is that they keep you from getting lazy. You are forced to move to get your subject framed up properly and it keeps you thinking artistically.
You've gotten some nice shots out of your copy... particularly the second one there. NICE
Bokeh looks awesome.
(For those learning a bit here, he wouldn't have gotten the same result from the 50 f1.8. Its a result of the f1.4 having 8 diaphragm blades within the lense when it closes as opposed to the f1.8 only having 5. It creates that smoother background blur and less harsh blurring of OOF light sources in the background. It is a very subtle difference, but worth noting.)
The 50 f1.4 is a great lense. I think Canon realises that since 50mm is the only common focal length they don't have an L prime available in. They rely on the 50 f1.4 to carry their line at that range. I used the 50mm a ton for a while, but I do alot of shooting indoors in low light. The 50mm was a bit long for me indoors, which got me drooling over the 35 f1.4 L. Its the perfect length for indoor shots.

For newbies like me though...please indicate what camera, lens, & settings you are using.
I pretty much made this thread for us DSLR guys to share pics & maybe pick up a few pointers.
This thread has helped me greatly. here are some new shots I took the other night. I posted them in picture share.

Oh I've got way too many to post them all there. But I'll throw a freebie your way every now and then I suppose
Canon 350D with the kit 18-55mm lens. Both of these were on Av, f8, +1. This is Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo Japan when I visited last December.
