Sorry Nikonians...I joined Canon's force Waited too long for the D700 replacement and I don't even think they're going to replace it this year. Not to mention it'll probly end up being another "s" version with no extra pixels that I need for my work. It was time to go back to Canons!

What happened to the quality? You said you didn't like the plastic feel of it.

I still don't but the quick menu is pretty insane and the megapixels (I some times need 5'x6' prints) and video. All the things I needed right in one place. I do miss the AF system, build quality, and button placements of the D700 - but you give some and you get some - in my case I got a lot of stuff I needed Not to mention the 17-40mm is a lens I really needed! Good price range, exceptional quality, and great build for only $730 shipped brand new!

It's not much bigger than the 70-200 f/2.8L IS.

85L is a great lens.

^ nice! Did you get a catback too? I just got the Motordyne Gamma. As for the iPad, its my lifesaver since I'm on the go all the time. Not to mention I've been lucky enough to get their unlimited 3G plan for $30/month before they recently switched to the lame sauce $25/month for only 2 gig! And now they're charging $20/month for tethering! Ridiculous considering anyone who knows anything can get a tethering program on their iPhone/iPad for $10....one time fee.

Congrats on the switch Alvin. I'm loving my 5D2 so far. I have the 70-200mm f/4L which fits my need but would love the 2.8 down the line. I'm picking up a 24-70mm f/2.8L in 2 weeks. Why'd you go with the 17-40L over the 16-35L? The 17-40 is my next lens after the 24-70 and can't personally justify the $$ for 2.8.

I'm loving it but maybe not as much as I would if the AF system wasn't so shitty. I think that's my biggest gripe so far with this camera. I seem to experience some soft focusing issue but I am trying to verify this. Never had any AF issue until this camera and it's bothering the hell out of me. Apparently if you google it the 5D mk II focus problem is a serious one. This essentially ruled out any possibility of my buying a second body and waiting for a Mark III . In fact, its pissing me off so much I am almost regretting my decision to switch. My next few shoots will determine this.

As for the lens I think the 17-40mm is a better lens than the 16-35mm for the money. I got mine new from B&H for $730 overnighted (had all the gear overnighted because I couldn't deal without camera equipment and someone bought most of my nikon's all at the same time). Anyways, the week after I got one off CL brand new condition, few weeks old for only $550 so it was a no brained. I kept that one and returned the B&H one back to them. I also don't shoot wide as much. In fact, the 70-200mm stays on my camera 80% of the time. I was going to get the 24-70mm but it Is a really old design that's not as good as the nikon version and they might be replacing it soon. I might just hold off for the new version or go for the 24-105mm which shows to be sharper at f8-f11

What are the conditions you're shooting in and can you post some shots?

The only time I have focus issues is when using AI Servo. My 85L, 135L and 200L nail focus wide open as long as I didn't screw up.

My last two shoots has been at noon, dry day, some clouds. At least 1/250 to 1/500 at f8 to f11 and the focus is on the model, but the image is super soft when you look at it at 75% to 100%. Obvious that it's soft. You must have gotten a good copy. I'll try more tests and see but apparently it's not a new issue:

I shot my first wedding this weekend and shot in all conditions from noon and cloudless to inside a church with crap lighting and only had a couple times where AF was soft or missed (none outside all inside) with my 70-200. I'm talking like maybe 10-15 out of 1300+ shots. I'm aware of the AF issues and complaints and will upgrade to the mkIII as soon as it comes out but mine isn't as bad as what your describing. Have you tried MA on the 70-200?
