I'm kind of in the same boat. I volunteered to shoot my sister's engagement photos... I haven't shot engagement or wedding photos but I am a pretty experienced photographer.
I plan on using a longer lens to reduce depth of field and insure there are no wide angle distortions, which are usually not to flattering to women. If I do use a wide lens I won't get too close to the subject so the people are not distorted, these are supposed to be beautiful and fun. I also will shoot in nice soft light, meaning not to contrasty with harsh shadows, which are not to flattering. If I do use a high contrast area, such as a garden patio area with columns in sunset light ( Mission Inn, Riverside) I will bring a reflector. I bought a reflector off of amvona via ebay and got a deal... but a reflective windshield shade will do the trick as well. Use the reflector to fill in harsh shadows on the subject. On camera flash tends to be to harsh unless dialed down or softened up.
As far as location anywhere scenic, museums, librarys, beachs, parks et cetera. First date locations or set up shots could be really fun too. If you want some inspiration google "PDN's top knots contest" every year they have a wedding photographer contest, all their work is there.
Any other advice would be appreciated as I have not taken engagement photos yet either.
