Just recently ditched my D40 for a D90, the D300 was a little bit more than I wanted to spend and the D90 was a good price/performance compromise.

Here are a couple shots with it the past weekend, first time shooting through it with the stock 18-105mm 3.5-5.6 VR lens:

Shooting with a D80. Bought several lenses soon afterwards:

Nikon 18-135mm kit lens
Nikon 50mm f/1.4
Sigma 70mm f/2.8 macro
Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8

Besides shooting cars, I'm trying to learn to shoot landscape and macro photography.

15-55mm kit
70-300 f/4-5.6

Flash:
SB600

Next is 18-200VR and 15-55mm f/2.8.
Mostly shooting my kids now

I think BHPhoto prices are usually pretty good.

I have been reading some great things about the 35mm. That is next on my list and either the 18-200vr or something else that competes with it in the price range.
