auto photography...and animals..wild life...
Tamron 17-50 2.8 for auto (forgot how much this costs new, but prolly around $450)

Canon 55-250 for animals and wildlife ($200-$250 brand new on Craigslist)

Canon also has a 28-135. It was one of my first lenses. Didn't do much for me.

Yuck.

You'll only need three lenses for every situation..

24-105F4L for a walk around, 35mm 1.4 for indoor, 70-200 F2.8L IS for cars, outdoor sports, nature. Having a 1.6X extender will increase your range. Having a crop will extend it even more.

I love my 24-70L (f/2.8 > f/4 IS for my uses) and 35L. Miss my 70-200 2.8L IS all the time.

But every single lens you mentioned exceeds his budget.

And a crop will not extend anything. People have this misunderstanding that you multiply lens focal lengths by crop factors and that is the effective focal length. No. Crop bodies do just that. Crop. They don't give you more reach. They don't give you more zoom. They don't extend your range. They do give you a narrower field of view.

Seriously? OP wants to spend $400 and you rattle off a small list that adds up to over $3k on the USED market...

You could go the Nifty 50 & Nifty 250 route, but that would probably leave you wanting more on the wide end for automotive shooting.

The Tamron 17-50 is pretty awesome. Buddy has one on his I am amazed of the quality.

I have the kit lens and I see its limits, probably going to be buying that tamron soon.

I'll get my buddy to send me some of his work with the lens. $400 is nothing for a lens...he also has a few L series pieces, he only uses them on specific things - he loves his tamron.

The Tamron (non-VC) is an excellent alternative to the Canon 17-55 2.8 IS at half the cost. It's AF is loud, but that's not really much of an issue for most people.
