One thing GTM is good at is taking the time to make sure their work is top notch.

As for 18PSI... I am pretty sure there are plans for more boost then that

you guys think with 18+ psi with a turbo setup, head lift won't be an issue?

the new Xterras have a 4L too.

I might just locate a block off of one of those and build it. lol.

I'm sorry if this sounds like a noob question but . . .

Which Stroker "type" (like 3.8, 4.2, etc) will allow the highest revs?

Thanks.

3.8 Because it is closer to stock stroke, which is why I am sticking with the 3.8L engine.

Would that even work, or are you just joking? Like....P/P, cammed Z heads on a 4L Xterra short block? Don't flame me if it's way off, lol.

Hey GTM,

I plan on having a built boost setup on my car eventually. I'm debating on building my block first and break it in and then go with boost. Honestly, I am almost certain it will be a Power Lab Single. What horsepower can you get out of build 3.8 or 4.2 Stroker? If i'll be within the 300whp range I'd like to start with a motor build then go boost. My car is a weekend toy and Eventually I'll reach that goal of massive hp. If a stroker kit can give me a strong NA setup, I'll be happy while I save up for boost.

What kind of HP is possible with a build NA setup? Thanks.

If you are going for boost you will want a low compression motor as where with N/A you want high. So if you plan on doing a stroker motor N/A for now but want to boost it later go low compression but don't expect too high of numbers until it gets boosted. I doubt you will see anything close to 300whp on an ~8.5:1 motor in a Z.

I knew compression was a factor but I thought that the higher displacement would allow for a few more ponnies.

You really have to choose which route you would like to go....

Unless you want to supercharge the car, then I would go with a 11.5:1 CR drive it N/A for a while, You will probably be around 350rwhp with a good standalone.

Then throw on a supercharger kit, (Vortech, HKS, etc.) and re-tune for more boost and upgrade fuel system if you haven't already done so.

If you want a track car, SC wouldn't be a bad route. Although you won't get that kick that a turbo car puts out.

Good luck!

That sounds pretty cool. I'll take that into consideration.

George, what do you think it would make at ~8.5 or 9.0:1 N/A?

I have no clue lol, Your going to gain a little from the displacement (assuming you do a 4.2) but loose a little from the compression.

I would still say around 300-330 rwhp. I could be completely off though

You would be an absolute fool not to do everything at once. You would be paying for rework everywhere you look.

You would be pulling the motor twice. first time installing N/A goodies along with some sort of ems or reflash + tuning. then again when you go for a FI setup. most likely pull the motor for a TT install.. foolish to run a SC. Then possibly a new EMS or at least a retune. I would guess at a minimum you would be paying an extra 3 grand out of pocket to do a 2 step build like that... possibly as much ast 5 or 6 grand due to the rework and tunes.

IMHO a stroker is not needed, and just adds to the complexity of a build... complexity = more potential issues. Stick to a nicely built motor on stock sleeves and run whatever TT setup floats your boat. On this car, the sweet spot is 500 whp. any more isn't usable on the street and merely becomes bragging rights. If your car is a dedicated track car or dyno queen, by all means go for broke, but that doesn't sound like it is the case.
