Id like to bump this thread... Im prob looking at repolishing the lips or the entire wheel.. Good DIY though!!
Volks do have anodized lip though.... I wouldnt try the Oven cleaner thing though, I would recommend sanding with a portable sander!!

sanding the lip would also risk removing the anodized layer of the lip on volk wheels in addition you have to even out the sanding mark on the matal which will take out more layers..
i prefer paint stripper with very minimal dwell time each application making sure it doesnt eat the metal (your towel will turn grey once you hit metal)... then i move on to aluminum polish...
