I don't really think that my update was "off topic" I'm sorry it wasn't about your build, but I believe that I was also "testing the waters with the Turbonetics ST" I didn't really expect my turbo to be replaced, it just really sucks that I am our 1000 dollars due to their incompetence.

Unfortunately providing a new turbo is the only reasonable thing they can do. Performance parts companies cannot make practice of refunding every dollar spent trying to get a part to work, even if it's a manufacturing issue, or else they'd be out of business real quick. I don't think you're going to make 500whp on the 60-1 because the turbo isn't sized for that kind of power. You'll probably see 450-470whp and a lot of torque.

That being said, I'd like to ask that the thread not get off topic. If you'd like to turn it into a Turbonetics bashing session, make another please.

Thanks, actually I'm hoping the spool characteristics won't be that much different than the previous setup. This time around we've taken into account of our power goal of 600+ with the utec and future goal of 700+whp on a stand alone EMS (most likely Haltech).

The new compressor will be big, but should also be resistant to surge on low boost under partial throttle.

I'll see if Jeremy can get some pics of the turbo this weekend.

It will spool up later.I notice going from twin GT25's on the APS standard to twin GT28's on their extreme kit, the car has lost that low end spool up, and makes full boost at 4500rpms whereas the older set up spooled at 3600.
Just off set the spool up with N2O

Sure, but I don't believe it will be THAT much of a difference. We didn't change the turbine side at all.

Unlike your example, we didn't swap out for an entirely new turbo. You're thinking of out-of-the-box turbo sizings while I'm on the level of actually sizing the individual components. We only went with a larger compressor side with a nicer housing so I'm hoping it'll make full boost around the same time that extreme kit does.

Craig is spot on with his assessment I think. The GT25 turbo uses a 53mm 62 trim turbine with a smaller compressor (46.5mm 60 trim) while the GT28 uses a 53.8 mm turbine with a 76 trim and a larger compressor (47.2 mm 62 trim). I would fully expect the GT28 to spool up slower as the turbine and compressor size both went up. Craig is not changing the turbine section at all on the new unit. He is simply moving up in compressor wheel and housing size to a 72mm compressor as opposed to the 66mm he was running. Bottom line the turbine section is identical to what he had before and the additional weight of moving up 6mm in the compressor side should have a negligible affect on his boost threshold. Additionally his last compressor did not have the Compressor Shroud porting his new compressor cover will have. That alone will widen the map and allow for some better air flow at lower boost pressure and prevent surging as it bypasses air past the inducer and allows air to flow directly to the major fins at lower boost and throttle positions. Short version: his spool up won't likely change enough to be noticeable if at all.

that is some interesting stuff, is the porting you are talking about the holes drilled into the inlet (venturi shaped cone off the middle of the intake side of the turbo? I wondered what that was for.

how does that close at higher boost or is it simply an effect of the airflow at that point?

They don't close. They simply improve flow at both low and high boost levels. At lower levels this give an "anti surge" effect, and at higher boost it facilitates increased air flow and allows the turbo to operate more efficiently. Hence the term "map enhancement porting".

+1... Typically when you run a large compressor wheel at low boost pressure/mass flow rates the compressor will be at the surge limit. The ports in the compressor shroud (compressor inlet) allow air to bypass the inducer on the compressor and go directly to the major section on the compressor to prevent the compressor from surging on the low end. At the top end it allows more then just one inlet to the compressor wheel and widens the compressor map to allow more efficient air at various levels of boost pressure.
