Default Super GT

Aloha
Last year I started getting into Super GT racing via Nismo TV. I’m a long time F1 and Lemans fan and found Super GT to be as good or maybe better than either of these. The cars are based on Japanese street cars, though like NASCAR there’s a tube framed body underneath. Nissan races the GTR (they raced 350z back a decade ago or so)...and there’s 2 classes GT500 and GT300...making different power outputs. The GT500 cars are as fast or faster than current F1 cars, but there’s less gadgets and much lower budgets and even privateers. Also the commentators are really good! Check out Nismo TV on YouTube to see the upcoming schedule, old races etc. I bet some of you will really like it!
The season starts April 7..here’s a link

Thanks for passing that on! Wish we could get Nismo TV here on TV on the mainland. To my knowledge it just isn't carried by the Greed carriers but at least available on Tube

Great stuff, been subscribed to the YT channel for a bit now and that's where there's an insane lap of LeMans! The on-board view coming down to the Mulsanne curve onto the straight and unbelievable brake-down to Indy corner... Whew!

Nismo TV has current coverage of the enduro at Bathurst (Australia) which is one of those bucket list tracks (which I'll never drive most likely but hope to get to next year!)

Thanks!

One correction: fast as GT500 JGTC cars are, they are NOWHERE near as quick as current F1 cars. The GT500 cars are probably closer to FIA GT1-spec cars and GT300 closer to FIA GT3.

I remember going to Cal Speedway in 2004 (05?) to report on the JGTC exhibition race for Nissan Sport Magazine. The Motul GT500 350Z was impressive to say the least. It was too bad not many spectators or local media came out to cover the event. JGTC never came back to the States after that...

Would LOVE to attend a Japanese Super GT.... have to look at our schedule for Japan tour (not for a couple of years, dammit... but by then hope to have our invites to the Heritage Museum sewn up)

Love the JGTC Z cars!!

Now that's bodywork to behold!!

How come the US doesn't have a Touring Car championship??

Oh wait..... NASCAR.... sorta. I love watching the NASCAR racers on road courses.... they're all confused. "Wait, whudya mean I gotta turn RIGHT?!?"

Well depends on what you call “NOWHERE”. But F1 times around Suzuka in 2015 were 1:38 and a Super GT500 car does it in a 1:40.
I was calling 2 seconds pretty close. (Edit I see Lewis Hamilton did the record 1:27 so that’s definitely faster. The slower 2017 F1 cars are in the 1:34 range.)
So...these cars go around the track *nearly* as fast as an F1 :-) car but on something like 1/20-1/100 the budget of a large F1 team..using production-ish bodies, no KERS, no DTS and narrower tires too. It’s genuinely impressive.

True! Forgot all about IMSA.... and I just watched the Sebring coverage of, I think, Pirelli Challenge. Good production car racing!

I like that Super Tuner class and even though not a big fan of Minis, the Pombo brothers finishing 1-2 in class was pretty cool to watch!

Yep that's good stuff, just doesn't get much TV coverage. We were watching them live at the St Pete Gran Prix. Then noticed the race wasn't showed on TV until nearly a week later. Best part is they are REAL cars, just add some aero, roll cage, fuel cell (plus other race stuff) and go. Thus you can recognize the cars, IE: Audi, BMW, etc, vs NASCAR in which a Camaro and Camry are the same thing but with different stickers

I’ll have to check those out. Might be heresy but I like Formula E too.
