Default Is This From Negative Camber? Puzzled

hey guys,
I have a problem with my rear passenger tire. Today I took off my rims to put back on my stocks and when I pulled off my rear passenger rim, the inner tire had huge chunks missing from it all the way around. I checked the rear driver's side and they were fine. I inspected inside of the fender all over and found no rub marks or anything. I've seen bad negative camber wear, but this looks like someone just ripped all of it off with a hacksaw. WTH is this? Also, is it still driveable? Only have about 2000 mile son these tires.

O btw...i have an 06 with hotchkis drop springs.

WTH is this? (rear passenger tire)

That doesn't look like camber wear or even feathering. Looks like something gouged it and cut the tire... anything in the fender that may have caused it? Didnt go through any car-washes with "tracks" did you?

I'm going to disagree and say that it does look like camber issues. If you've dropped the car and haven't added a camber kit, I'm going to guess that your alignment is way out. The first pictures are pretty severe, but the last one definitely is cupping.

my friend doesn't think it's camber either. Hawaii has huge pot holes, but tried to avoid all of them. We also have a ton of those steel plates and i have to drive through them everyday. I remember one instance where I had to drive though a lot of messed up plates/roads. Could this be it?

I also hear you on the camber issue. The odd thing is, it's only that side. Hotchkis only lowers the car .8" in the rear and I've only driven with those on for ~1000 miles. If it was camber issue, that camber would have been wickedly negative. Just from plain site, both sides seemed to have the same negative camber.

Anywho, i'm getting an alignment tomorrow with my stocks and see if it is camber issues or not.

One final thing. Say it's not camber issues, is it still useable if I get alignment?

Thanks

I bet it was a plate that cut it then if that was a possibility. Im not sure if I would really want to risk driving on it though because it is a good place to start seperation if possible. You just have to think if it is worth the risk of damaging the rim if it goes out and you do not replace it (I for one have driven on some pretty shady tires in the past though ). But sounds as if they are pretty new so that you could just replace the one side and not both rear tires.

You might want to have them do a major check of your tires when you do the alignment. If it's only tread damage, I'd say drive 'em 'til they pop! Seriously, if it's only surface damage, I'd think the only problem you'd have might be a rough ride. Do you have road hazard on the tires?

get an spc camber kit. our z's suffer from excessive toe in, and some minor negative camber. get a camber kit, and the toe bolts, and you'll save your tires. and when you hit up the roadcourse, just add some negative camber.

I bet the inside of your tire is wearing on your coilover locking collar. I'm assuming you have coilovers.

Nope just hotchkis springs.

But yea, I'll take the tire to see what they say. With a .8" drop I shouldn't need camber kits tho right? Or is the toe bolts different?

Agree. You are cutting the tire on a suspension component.

So if i get alignment, would that solve the "cutting problem?" My bro-in-law said the same thing, but idk how to find out what it's hitting on. My friend and I inspected the whole suspension/fender well and found no trace of rubber anywhere

I'm kinda leaning toward that or something on the road. My bro-in-law said it couldn't be camber/toe, but then again he hasn't seen it in person. Only these pics.

Again tonight we jacked up the car and rotated the wheel on stock 18's. Everything clears by a lot. Then we dropped it down and bounced on the car. Still plenty of clearance.

Then we put that messed up tire on and rotated the wheel. Plenty of clearance. Then we dropped it down on the ground and bounced the car. Still plenty of clearance. The bouncing was done by me 165 lbs and my friend 210 lbs. Both times there was a lot of clearance.

Along with bouncing, we inspected everywhere inside the fender again. No markings on the fender well or any of the suspension parts.

I'm canceling my alignment appt tomorrow and having my bro-in-law take a look at it at his shop. I'll let you guys know the verdict. He thinks it's either hitting something (i doubt) or a bad tire.

It’s a good question. If a suspension component is cutting the tire, it will leave a black dust residue on the component. Should not be difficult to find.

camber wear or any alignment issue would have smoothed out the tires, you ran over something

I would also concur that you gouged it on something you ran over. Doesn't look like a tire defect.

Never. I always had wash. I usually drive this car 1-2 times a week. I'm a super **** driver. The only time I can see when this happened was a few weeks ago when I had to drive down this stretch of road where there were steel plates and bumps all over that road.
