Help.. Focal = failed
Hey Guys,
I have a set of focal 165kp components up front. Recently one of the midrange speakers failed. The wire from the lead terminal to the voice coil was severed. I am quite diasspointed after what I payed for these things.
So Im stuck with perfectly good 2 tweeters, 2 components, and 1 midrange. What do you think my best option is? Can I just replace the midrange speakers with a different brand or model? If i buy a new set of components, can I use the focal tweeters and crossovers (the tweeters are installed in the factory location witch I have drilled out)? What do you think?
thanks

How old are they(warranty)? check around to see if there's a local speaker repair shop. If you feel competent thats actually an easy fix

Reattaching the wire to the voicecoil is not that big of a deal
I'd also take the time to figure out why it severed. Vibration? Poor solder joint? Overextension of the driver?

if unrepairable and you cant find a replacement mid, i would buy a separate set of mids and run them active with the tweeters you already have. i damaged a mid on my focal 136k components back in the day and that's what i ended up doing.
I had them for a few years now. I dont know what kind of warranty they come with, but I'm waiting to hear back from Focal.
I think the adhesive that holds the lead wire to the speaker cone failed. This allowed the vibrating speaker cone to eventually break the thin voil coil wire. I tried to solder to the wires together, but I couldnt. The voice coil wire severed right next to the spider. There was less than a millimeter of wire to work with. I tried to expose more wire by cutting a small hole in the spider, but the voice coil wire was covered and could not be accessed. I honestly don't think I can solder the wires without destroying the speaker.
If I cant get a replacement from Focal, I guess I'm going to have to find some midrange speakers and replace both sides. Anyone know where I can find some quality midranges without the tweeters and crossovers?
thanks

you can order raw drivers from focal but they'll be expensive. you could also try seas or morel. if you're on a budget, elemental designs 6500 mids are pretty good for the price.
