have been going to ocracoke for 12 years every summer, going again week of july 4, and i cant wait to take the z down from dc.
IMHO go to www.edwardsofocracoke.com for lodging. iIn my many years there, I have stayed in huge houses, motels, hotels on the island, and if you are travelling with just one other person, Edwards is a great place to go, get a bungalow, they are $70 a night, the place is run by a nice family.
As far as eats, go to the backyard restaurant, they are good, so is cafe atlantic. not really any 4 star dining options, but those two have good wine, as well as well prepared food.
Pelican restaurant is open the latest during the week and they sling decent brew. howards pub of course is always a good choice, it is on the main road, cant miss it.
make sure you go kayaking in the ocean. rent them at http://www.surfocracoke.com/ for like $8 an hour. its gorgeous.
if you want other good lodgings, go to ocracokeislandrealty.com to check out house rentals. also try blackbeards hotel. old, but fun
enjoy

yeah definitely check out edwards, they have several different types of rooms avaiable. the bungalow has made fiscal sense to me the past couple of years. the rooms is a nice size and clean, and i do most of my stuff outdoors anyways (dont need a plush luxury room) when im on the island. and again, check out the kayaks.
me and my brother on the sound last year.

Highly recommended. Go there all the time. Agree with RichEdward's guidance above. Driving on the beach is a blast! Surf fishing can be great, depending on the weather.
If you like isolated (semi) beaches, you'll love it.

soccertoad has got it right. this place is a getaway on the east coast. my week/weekends are ****ing insane anough, when its time for a vacation, ocracoke is miles more attractive then a myrtle beach or similar venue. i go with friends and we find our own trouble. or we stay out of it, it depending on our bar tabs and what we brought onto the island... but peace and quiet are around every corner if you like
