Hey Kaiser- come out to the ZCCC track day in Golden this next Saturday and show us your driving skills. No worries about the cops there- and it's good to know they're been trained at the same facility you can run flat out on! Seriously, THIS (or another road racing facilitiy) is where you can practice lapping at and get your speed freak on...

that sounds like fun... the only problem is i don't really have a proper car for that. I drive an f-150 and when i was going 130 it was in my mom's x5
now we do have a new bmw 545i and an 84 porsche 911 but i really doubt i i could get my parents to let me take them....
and i don't really have "driving skills" as far as course driving, i was just saying i felt perfectly safe (though not real smart) at 130 in a straight line.

I have gone really fast on C-470 before, I do think that there are places where you can hit high speeds and not have to worry about being too dangerous. If you go fast on a public road (yes, although illegal) you can do it so you lose the risk of hurting others. My biggest issues with C-470 and high speeds is cops, the generally crappy quality of the surface and deer. The fact that you did it in a X5 makes is more silly. I have friends with 1000 hp Supras and from a roll 130 comes up really fast so many of their night races on the highways may go up to even past 150, but that happens quick and they have a suspension and braking system that is better prepared for those speeds, not to mention a much lower center of gravity.
My top speed ever was 155ish on a Sunday morning very early driving back to Denver from C. Springs. I did it on that long slightly down hill straight just north of Monument after you crest that hill. There were literally no cars on the road and I was alone in the car so....
I think it is easy to say take it to the track but I do realize that the maybe 3 times a year I make it to the track will not even close to satisfy my speed addiction. So I will not rip on people for speeding on public roads. The only thing that makes this any different from the autobahn (which everyone who says "take it to the track" thinks is pretty cool and not stupid) is the fact that is illegal, and that other drivers do not expect cars to be moving that fast, which makes a big difference. So therefor I do not rip on people for doing it if their are no cars around because at that point you are being fairly safe.

Don't rip on people for driving at WOT for miles over a road that can be highly traveled? Nah, we shouldn't do that! Bull*** That kind of tacit approval is the worst kind of crap. The capacities of a modern sportscar like the 350Z (or S13 or...) is the least of your worries. The car's design parameters will easily exceed 150 MPH, but does the driver have the ability to react within that speed range? The answer is NO and that also means if the you-know-what hits the fan (and even if you avoid taking someone else out) you'll still be left holding the bag as your car skates off the road and goes over or hits something solid. You won't have much protection at high speeds with multiple impacts and after all the thumping stops, you'll lie- trapped, bleeding with multiple fractures and internal injuries- in a crushed wreckage (hopefully) by the side of the road.
Wups! Those flames popped up a bit! Let's turn this down to 'roast' again. I've tried to encourage people in a positive way to take it to the track, only because that's where serious speed belongs. I've gone out of my way to help others to develop their driving skills and explore the design envelope of their Nissans (and other marques) in a more controlled environment. I'll continue to be involved in motorsports because it's not only the greatest stuff in the world, but doing it develops the skills and reactions to save your a$$ in the real world.
I'm no angel. I recognize that adreneline rush (and the ego to brag about it) and am lucky enough to have seen it for what it is- a lousy gamble with very s***ty odds. So you can't get enough of a speed fix by going to the track 3 times a year? Get involved in racing. Take a car to the absolute limit of YOUR abilities, lap after ragged-edge lap and you'll be glad you can drive home at 55-75 MPH in a relaxed manner. That kind of afterglow will last a long time and beats spending time in court, the hospital or jail by a long shot.

I think poorly designed roads better describe our highway system. Our roadbase is about 7" shy of Autobahn specs. This leads to much faster decay of the road surface, not to mention more susceptible to frost heaves and the like. Notice the 2 on C470 westbound near Chatfield Res.
I'm not trying to flame anyone, just point some things out. Dave is right about what will happen if something goes wrong at those speeds. I personally think that most of the risk comes from the improperly trained drivers Dave mentioned. People who think nothing of merging onto the highway 35mph under the posted limit, not knowing how to properly pass, etc.
I rambling now so I'll just say that I've got nothing against those that speed. I just think Dave raises some good points that should be taken into consideration before you lay into that throttle.
P.S. - 145mph on south bound I-25 at 2am, nobody around. If I die, I die, my choice, nobody elses.

lawlz, I love it Bamyi! My old street in Monument is about 3/4 mile long, straight and 25mph. I usually get to 90mph before slowing down for the driveway, my only concern there is deer. lol
