Default ODBII USB scanner?

So I've decided to do an in-car PC system for my new Z. I just ordered the touch screen and I'm downloading some software to start playing with. The primary thing I want to use it for is GPS but I also wanna get ODBII data from the car. I'm VERY new to this stuff (ODBII and engines that is) - I work with computers for a living.

My question is any reason this device wouldn't work?
http://www.scantool.net/products/pro...products_id=41

It's pretty cheap I just wanna make sure it'll connect to the Z just fine. Does anyone know where the connector is (I'm assuming yes).

Thanks guys...

Ross

Wouldn't you also need a UTEC or something the like to connect to the ECU?

Not for OBDII scanning. Sounds like all he wants is to check the OBDII codes and things like that, im intrested to see his results as id like the same so i could check my error codes more often and i dont really want a scan tool since i dont find much use in those midget little screans, id like it on a laptop. Let us know how it goes, that tool looks to fit the bill, i might just keep an eye out since i think they have some smaller units. The thing plus in right under your legs you might not want a large unit always plugged in.

Spivey, you're right on (as usual I can see) - I want this to go to my laptop for real time diagnostics and code reading. From what I saw this is all I'd need (plus the software obviously). I'll probably order it now. If it's too big I'll figure out a way to tuck it under the dash or build a cable for it...

I'm going to fully document the process of the CarPC so I'll post a full story when I'm ready...

Here is a way to see if it bothers you. Get a kids juice box or something to that size, go find the port under your legs on the drivers side and put it flat against that. see if its to big for you. The unit will be about that size. If its not a big deal perfect, if it is, i can dig up some of the smaller units ive seen that go for around 100. Also i can help you with software when the time comes. Just give me a ring.

The OBD port is just above your left knee under the dash. You can't miss it. I have one of these:

Small, I leave it plugged in all the time. Forget it's there. It's not real time connection to PC, just data storage and download. I bought it to monitor how my baby is treated when it's in the dealer's hands. One time I found burn-out tire dust on my trunk lid. Or to plot the trip with the MileHighZ gang. See towards the end of this thread for the displays.

Thanks guys, I did order it today so I'm hoping it won't be too big. If it is I can't imagine it's too hard to build a cable for it and put the unit in my glove box with my PC. Spivey feel free to point me toward any of the software out there. Remember I'm not really a "track driver" (not yet anyway) I'm just looking for real time monitoring of stuff. Being a network guy I love seeing graphs of what's going on in real-time.

I'll let everyone know what I think of it when I get it. Of course first I've gotta get my Z back from the shop, that's supposed to be tomorrow...

Thanks,

Ross
