Default Dyno Days @ Dyno-Comp

I am in the process of setting up a Dyno Days for those of us in the Phoenix area. We will primarily be targetting VQ35's, but it's not strictly limited to that powerplant.

I have been discussing this with Richard at Dyno-Comp. For those of you who aren't familiar with Dyno-Comp, they have a nice upscale shop at Scottsdale AirPark off of Raintree Dr. and Hwy 101. Their shop is very clean and professional with almost 5000sq.ft., two lifts and an AWD dynamometer. They have a new website which is about to be released, but until then, their old one still works. Here's the link:

http://www.dynocomp.com

Everyone I know of that has had work done there has left very satisfied and wanting more. There are a few people on this board such as cbsuper and myself who are among that group.

Anyhow, here are the specifics.

Date: November 8, 2003
Time: nothing official, pretty much all day.
Price: $65 for 3 pulls ($20off regular rates). A/F, EGT, and other monitoring available for a slight premium.

Also, if you are interested, I was planning on heading down to Firebird Raceway, where they are having a Saturday Import Drags event. It's $10 to watch, $15 to race. It's basically the same as the Friday Night Drags, but setup to draw out the import crowd (which could be good or bad depending on your perspective). We could probably make plans for a dinner somewhere in there too. Sorry for being so informal, but I think it'll come together and we'll all have a good time.

Please reply to this post or PM me if you are interested. I will need to give Richard an approximate head count sometime before the Dyno Days. I hope to see you all there.

I'm in for Dyno-Comp for sure. Possibly the other activites as well.

I'd like to be down at Dyno-Comp in the morning sometime.... maybe around 10 am or so.

I talked this over with Richard at Dyno-Comp some more and he said he'd throw in the O2 monitoring for the same $65 rate. I am a bit disappointed at the feedback so far, so we sweetened up the deal. Please spread the word. I don't want my first attempt at setting up a Dyno Days with Dyno-Comp to be a bust.

I'll be there! I think you should set up a firm time though. If you just say whenever it may make everyone feel a bit lazy about it.

I'm looking forward to it.

Hmmmm, not a good day for many of us as there is a combined G35 and Z run to Sedona that day! I have used Richards services before and would like to go back, but this Sedona run is going to be a good one and I don't want to miss it. Regards, Jim

I would welcome any advice regarding a time for this event. Some of us are planning on heading to Firebird afterwards, so we should conclude the Dyno Days by 5-6pm at the latest. So, I guess our start time would depend on our turnout, which I don't have a clue about yet. Should I just fix a time for it to start... like 10am??? Obviously if you can't make it at that time, you could show up later and probably still get in line for a run. What do you guys think???

JimH... I first heard about the Sedona thing earlier today. I have already posted about Nov 8th and that was a good day for Dyno Comp. I am doing a lot of travelling so my schedule isn't too open either. I don't think we could change it now. Regretfully, I guess people will have to choose between a drive to Sedona or some dyno time and racing.

Default Jim...

Didn't you make some runs at dynocomp earlier in the year? If I remember, due to the fact they use a four wheel dyno, their readings are much lower than using the standard two wheel dyno. Didn't you dyno at 218rwhp? With that kind of reading, that is nothing to brag about.

Anyway, for those of you that do go remember this... if the car is MT, run it in 5th gear (1:1 ratio), and disengage the VDC button, otherwise you will get very poor results. For those with AT, disengage overdrive and VDC.

I'm gonna have to dropout on this one and go for the Sedona run.... tough decision but so many Z's going on the run that I figure I'll do that one.

Hey, Ted, Long time no see. Missed ya' at the last DZA meeting and I wanted to show you the new grille. Are you going on the Sedona run? Maybe I'll see you at the next meeting?
Yup, I dyno'd an abysmal 220hp and 218 torque over there. I don't blame the dynomometer though. It was disappointing, but what can you do other than pour lots of money in on mods that (so far) are not accomplishing much in the overall scheme of things? Just saw a post where a guy had done pretty much all you could do and stay NA and I think he gained a paltry 14-16 hp. He figured it was costing him well over $200 or so PER HP! No thanks. Maybe FI some day.
Hope you can make the Sedona run! Oh, and don't forget the Tortilla Flat run this Saturday. Meet @ I-60 and Alma School @ 10am. Regards, Jim

FYI, this dyno will read lower than a Dyno Jet and definitely lower than a Mustang Dyno, but the differences are well documented. We can calculate crank HP from any results we get at Dyno Comp using this information. Hopefully we will have some more stock Z's to use as a baseline as well as the ones Richard has done so far.

Basically if you want to get realistic results and have your actual torque curve for calculating optimum shift points or are after a good baseline dyno for future mods, come on out. In fact, for anyone that shows up, I will get the required info from your car and calculate you optimum shift points for you just as a side benefit. Also, Richard agreed to do O2 monitoring for free, so that's just more information that you'll receive. If you are just after high dyno numbers to brag to friends about, I would recommend finding a shop with a Mustang Dyno and doing your runs there instead.

Now that I think about it, I think Richard could even throw in a correction factor so that we're graphing approximate crank HP. In fact, I think the dyno has built in calculations to make the dyno results match a Dyno Jet. I'll talk to Richard to see what our options are.

It looks like we'll have a handful of Z's (hopefully more), maybe a couple of G35's, some Maximas and a couple of GTPs right now. Hopefully we'll have a few more cars show up... then we'll have a full days worth of dyno's.

I can't wait to hit the track afterwards either. Hopefully most of those attending the Dyno Days will also be up for that too. It should be a blast.

For those of you planning on attending the Dyno Days at Dyno-Comp, we'll kick it off at 10am and wrap it up sometime before 6pm at which time we'll head down to Firebird Raceway. Here's a map showing how to get to Dyno-Comp. If you need any more information, please email me at boostedv6@***.net and I'll do what I can to get you're questions answered.

All, I just re-read this entire thread and agree with the comments generally. My Z has CAI, CAMS, Headers and a Cat Back Exhaust (all NISMO). Richard did three pulls for me yesterday (91 Octane, in Phoenix). They were very professional and helpful. I dynoed 230HP exactly, three times. I then asked him to Dyno in 5th instead of 4th and dynoed 234HP with a hot engine. The torque curve looked very smooth peaking at 211 lb/foot. A/F ratio was 12.4:1 and 13.0:1 throughout. Although I have CAMS, I have not re-flashed and therefore may well see 5/10 HP more from the CAMS at 7100 RPM. Engine was pulling hard at 6600 when the fuel cut off kicked in. The engine sounded awesome; no white or balck smoke. I will be adding a Motordyne spacer. While these numbers may be a great advertisment for not spending money on NA, I will be happy if the re-flash and plenum spacer top me out at 250 HP or more. Richard recommended dividing the 234 HP I did see by 25% and adding it to the 234 which puts me at 293 Crank HP right now. Apparently this dyno sees a 25% loss to the wheels compared to 17% on other dyno's. All of your thoughts/comments are welcome, particularly around my A/F ratio.

To all:

For best dyno results be sure to run your car from 2K rpm to redline several times on the way to the shop. And turn your AC on about 10 minutes before arriving.

IT WILL IMPROVE YOUR DYNO RESULTS.

Running to redline tells the ECU to go into performance mode.
Running the AC turns on the radiator fans and actually cools down the engine.

And a cooler engine will dyno better.

If you have an OBDII scanner available, try to start all your dyno pulls at 190'F coolant temperature for consistancy.
