hks exhaust for trade. (feeler)
i just went into PD for my background investigation interview and they asked if my windows were tinted i said yes because i would prolly get polygraphed. so they came out to take a pic. then they asked me to start the car and told me my exhaust was illegal because it was soo loud. i didnt argue because i want to get hired but i dont think hks is that much louder than stock. anyways i told him that its not louder than stock so he said hed look into it. so this weekend i have to take off my tint. if he says the exhaust has to go i might want to trade for a full nismo exhaust system and some cash. anyone interested?

Thats BS!...the exhaust meets the requirement of a max of 95dB...its a state SAE test. I really hate how cops who are human think they have the ability determine the dB rating by ear.....

Did you have your front license plate on at the time? While in the acadamy Tac officers love to go thru the parking lot looking for code violations on cadets cars and riding their *** for anything they can find.

gimpster621 - I might be interested in a swap (cash ?)
My NISMO is only 2 months old, but I've always wanted the HKS Titanium Hi-Power Exhaust.
How long have you had yours? Any pics? Are you willing to ship?

I agree with DJK, the Nismo is a bit louder than HKS and even at one of our dynodays that was confirmed. I guess they can't really say anything if you show the 'Nissan' instructions with the exhaust.
Good luck with the interviews!

Q: I have and HKS exhaust and I wanted to know if it is street legal and is there any documentation?
A: All HKS exhaust systems are engineered to comply with the 95dB noise limit law specified by the California Highway Patrol and the Society of Automotive Engineers - Except ones that are designated for Off-Road Use only.
Each system is individually designed for a specific application and complies with the requirements of Sections 27150, 27151 & 27200 of the California Vehicle Code; and Title 13 of the California code of Regulations, Section 10361, which establishes a noise limit of 95dB(A) for passenger cars. This statement applies to unmodified HKS exhaust systems that are less than 13 months old, are in good condition and which have been properly installed on the specific vehicle for which it was designed.
The age of your exhaust system along with certain engine modifications, such as headers, intake, etc., may also affect its current noise level output.
Please check with your local and state law enforcement agencies for exact regulation requirements.
If you would like documentation on HKS exhausts that meet this criteria, please contact either your local authorized HKS Dealer or our Tech line at 310 491 3300.

Don't know where I found the formal link for "CHP Information Bulletin No. 98-100" but hopefully the attached link can help you out, D.

EXCESSIVE Noise Enforcement
passenger vehicles, light trucks and motorcycles
The California Highway Patrol (CHP), Commercial Vehicle Section (CVS). has received many inquiries about excessive noise emitted by passenger vehicles, light trucks and motorcycles. Enforcement personnel and the public have Inquired regarding enforcement of the Vehicle Code (VC) sections pertaining to excessive noise emitted by these vehicles.
Excessive noise is primarily a nuisance issue rather than a safety concern, and determination of excessive noise is subjective. For this reason, enforcement personnel are to exercise sound professional judgment In making a determination of violation. The following guidelines and attached question and answer sheet (Attachment A) provide guidance to enforcement personnel regarding appropriate enforcement procedures.
Enforcement Guidelines
The only drivers who should be cited are those whose vehicles:
1) are not equipped with a muffler;
2) clearly emit an offensive, harsh, excessive noise, or,
3) have a clearly defective exhaust system (holes, leaks, ft.).
Clearing Citations
When clearing excessive noise citations issued by the CHIP or allied agencies, personnel are to consider exhaust systems in compliance if they incorporate a reasonably effective muffler, do not emit an offensive, harsh, excessive noise, and appear to be in good repair.
For additional information, contact Mr. Jack Schwendener, staff engineer in CVS, at CalNet 485-1865 or (916) 445-1865.
