Default San Diego "COPco" GTG - 7-15-06

The San Diego Summer GTG at Costco on Carmel Mnt. Road tonight, was well, ridiculous.

Cops anyone?

We were all just chilling around our cars when all of the sudden two cops pull up, lights and all of course. Ask everyone to stand by their cars with their license, registration, and proof of insurance. One by one they checked our cars, mine was first thankfully, and nailed us all for stupid thing. I got nailed for no front plate and gdup35sedan got nailed for headlight overlays and tint. Luckily I didnt get it for my tint.

Anyone else get nailed? I got one of the officer's badge number and name. Talk about harassment...

WOW, you got pulled over AFTER you left... damn. That was some SERIOUS BULL*CRAP tonight. I was in the blue stillen Z.... i think the guy didnt even know what he was looking at under my hood... its all carb legal but he was like... um... okay close your hood... without even looking at my carb sticker. He did nail me for tint and tried to nail me for exhaust... never been so glad to have to modest stillen exhaust.

Are they REALLY allowed to do that? That was ridiculous... I know there is a substation right across the street, but it didnt cross my mind until too late... I just cant believe the rolled us for HANGING OUT ... no one blasting music, no one doing burnouts... one cop told me there were complaints from local home owners about reving engines and 30-40 cars about to race... what a load.

This is exactly the reason i can not stand "ticket" cops. You know all they could have done was rolled by and checked out the scene and ask what you guys were doing that night, to be respectful, and maybe even say "we'll be watching you" if they wanted to scare you, but they went as far as making you place your hands on the hood and doing all the "procedural" bullcrap they do for someone who commits a crime. You know it boggles my mind how a couple guys standing by some "modified" cars will be given tickets for modified exhausts but when a harley drives past them blowing the windows off of hospital clinics, they will simply wave. Actually i would love, just LOVE, these two incidents happening at the same time to see what the poepoe would do then. If you were trully racing, reving, whatever, then ok, but just hanging out??? I just dont get it.

We werent required to place our hands on our hoods, atleast I wasnt. I was first to leave so I dont know what happened afterwards.
Very true about the Harley's. No offense to anyone but I hate Harley's just for that reason. Theyre louder than almost any car or exhaust system(for our cars) out there and they dont get ****.

What made me mad, along with others too, was a truck that was hauling *** through the parking lot and the cops didnt even flinch when they saw the truck speed through.

let me get you guys back to reality.

this same thing happened in San Jose right after Hot Import Nights was over.

a bunch of cars got pulled over, including myself. the cops wrote down my speed as above the speed limit, but did not cite me for it. i assume this is to justify them pulling me over should I take them to court.

as much as we all hate it, there's nothing illegal about what they did to you guys. given the high publicity of illegal street racing (someone died a couple of weeks ago in a Camaro and there was a big accident last week in the LA area), cops are gonna crack down.

and you guys were hanging around a parking lot with a bunch of cars. how do most illegal street races begin? with a group of guys hanging around a location trying to decide on the location of the race. they had good cause.

does it make it fair? hell no. it sucks.

after my incident i emailed a bunch of San Jose newspapers, sent one to the City of San Jose as well as other newspapers in the Bay Area describing my situation. How many replies did you think I got back? i heard Vision, the guys who put the show together, also wrote a letter of concern to San Jose.

it's gonna cost you time and money to fight this ticket. for those of you who got tint tickets and no front plate...boo-hoo. pay the fine and move on.

the g35 with the BOV and illegal exhaust will have a tougher time (sent you a PM on Driver).

i hate cops as much as the next guy. it sucks to have gotten cited while parked, chatting with friends. but we all know the risks associated with what we do to our cars.

best of luck to everyone.

why did you guys stand by your car? I woulda left the car parked where it was and come back later.

Good insights/perspective.... but of course we're mad because we got hit with tickets and things without having done anything wrong. I understand the concern that we might race... but its not the same kind of reasonable cause as if you were to see drugs or something in someones car. I mean they have no REAL way to know whether or not we were actually going to go race... which we weren't.

As for leaving the car parked and walking away... that wasn't much of an option because they said any cars left there without drivers would be towed.

Did those honda guys get towed because they left their cars or because of something else?

i understand the frustration.

as far as them towing your car if you didn't stand by it...empty threat by the police. unless you car was illegally parked, they have no justification to tow the car. given the way the police hand out citations, you need to be present to provide the necessary info. it's not like a parking ticket. that's why they threatened to tow the car.

but it is a good threat on there part. no one's gonna risk it. but next time you get put in this situation, walk away from the car.

same thing for me...next time the cop asks me if I have anything under the hood, i'll just open it and keep my mouth shut, unlike the last time where i told them everything

From what I understand, there's only a handful of cops at any given time in the RB and CMR areas combined. Seems like ALL of them were at Costco wasting our time instead of looking for real crime.
