I highly suggest you do not go to the state referee. Yes if you are under 95db you will not have to pay the fine and you just pay the filing fee however, the referee will not let you get away with not having cats etc. They check absolutely everything.
What I have done is just pay the bail and be done with it, i'm on my 4th already. Pain in the *** that's about it.

I don't know what would happen if i get pulled over for that. It would take a lot of money to fix it. For those of you who has gotten a fix-it ticket, do you know if the cops besides writing down your license plate number, do they also write down your VIN number? If they don't write down your VIN, can't you just get a same color car to the cop station to prove that you have fixed your car?

i take all of my fix it tickets to cerritos sheriff station.. they never go outside to look at the correction.. all they do is charge $15 to sign your ticket and then you mail it in to the court that issued it

f*ck... I just found out that I can't just PAY this god damn ticket thru either the website or their phone system.
I was trying to speak with an operator but the recording said "Too many callers are waiting, try later." and hung up on me. Hah. I've got like 2 weeks before this ticket is due...
Is there any way that its NOT payable ?!

a noise violation is only correctable by way of stae referee. only passable if you comply with the 95 db law. show the cert. to an officer...have him sign the ticket that it's fixed...then do a trial by declaration and state your case that the offense has been rectified. i have been through this a few times. pay the fine.

btw-AFTERMARKET EXHAUSTS ARE LEGAL IN CALIFORNIA! they are only illegal if they replace the cat OR if they do not comply to 95db between rpms 3000-5000.

Fix it tickets need to be paid. Usually it is only $10. However, there is an inspection required prior to them signing off. You can even have CPH sign it off for you. (Just an FYI)

Not wrong...(Please read on)
When I lived in LA County, I was given a fix-it ticket for having my front corner lights painted clear candy coated red (paint from hobby shop). I was then able to sand off the paint to restore the orange color, took it by Westminster CHP Office (off Goldenwest and Trask). They inspected it, and signed off on the ticket. I then took it back to the courthouse and paid my $10 dollars. Done deal...
They can do this because a car that does not past functional inspection, does not equate to a traffic violation.

Don't you just love Cali??? I got the same ticket years back when I had a single turbo with straight pipe and no cats in my FD RX-7. I ended up modifying the exhaust with silencers and switching back to the stock mufflers to really quiet it down. However, like you I was worried b/c you can still smell the hydrocarbons coming out the exhaust. I lucked out because it rained on the day I took it to my local sheriff's station to get the ticket signed off. The rain seems to wash out the strong odor somewhat. I got even more lucky when the person signing off the ticket was a female cop who knew nothing about cars. She actually commented that my car looked nice and didn't really even listen to my exhaust with any throttle before she signed it off. I think your best bet may be to switch license plates with someone with the same color Z and stock exhasut if you don't want to risk on getting caught with a modified emission system.
Good luck on getting this taken care of.
