Depends on how dark you plan on going. I got my 06 taillights sprayed so that they're equivalent to Bat's 3/10 overlays (but WAY glossier). Haven't had any issues.

(personally I think the blackout's look really tacky)

They look like they are BARELY tinted, and that is what I had hoped to achieve. The 06 LED taillights are very pink compared to the OEM 03-05 taillights (check them out side-by-side one day), and I just wanted to get them a darker red color vs a blackout

(my reverse lenses/turn signals are way too dark for me)

You shouldn't have to worry about getting pulled over for smoked tails... since most popo's can't tell the difference. Unless if you black it out which is pointless...

Well, I'm not actually sure what they would be considered. Like my taillights, they're actually just custom sprayed, but they'd be closer to 6/10 versus 3/10.

Unfortunately when I got them done, there was a misunderstanding since I told my painter to semi-smoke them the same way my taillights came out (basically so you can barely tell they were smoked). Anyways, he literally sprayed them EXACTLY the same (same amount of coats), and they came out way darker than I wanted. Apparently when you spray on a white lense it gets darker quicker than when you spray on a red lense. hah

Oh well, one day I'll trade someone for stock + $$ and get them redone.

I haven't had any problems for over 2 years. I have had many police cars behind my car. The lights transmit plenty of light still. I think that a major reduction of light would be the main reason you would get a ticket.

The way I tinted these lights they are still not as dark as my stock Firebird. Therefore, I feel pretty safe at this VHT tint level. I used two light coats, let it dry, clay barred the lights, clear coated, clay barred again, and crystal guarded (wax basically) ... done.

I tried film tinting ... I spent hours getting the bubbles out and it just didn't look as good as the $10 can of VHT Niteshades imo.

Have fun .... play around with different ideas, be creative. ;-)

If you have a bright color car like PPW or REDLINE... try to do a light tint since everyone would notice you tinted it and the popo's might get ****. But if you have a dark color car like any BLACK.. do watever you want, popo's won't notice it

If you are worried about being pulled over, I think the best thing you can do is turn your lights on anytime you drive. I have Bat's 6/10 overlays on my tails, and when I keep my lights on, day and night it's harder to tell that the lights were tinted.
