Default CEL/SES question

can i stop by any autozone or something to have a code reading on a service engine soon light?

I stopped by my local dealership to see if i could just find out what the light was for, not to get fixed since i was on my lunch break. They told me they can't tell me anything and that i need to check my car in for service which would take a full day.

I'm heading out to my regular dealership in the morning but i'm kinda nervous/anxious to see what the light is for.

Oh and also, when i quickly spoke to the service writer by my work he said its always emissions related. I thought the service engline light soon also came on with oil changes or regular maintenance as the odometer approaches certain mileage?

thanks.

You can go to autozone and they will let you borrow the check engine tester, it will give you the code and the description on the screen or in the book that comed with the code reader. You can then clal the dealership with the code to see if they can fix what is causing it.

Don't waste a whole day with the car at the dealership, running the CEL tester takes like 30 seconds as pepboys/autozone!

good luck dude (I actually bought my own CEL tester that I have in my car so I can check it anytime on any car)

How much did you pay for the tester?

got it on ebay for $30 shipped. It's orange and comes with a small silk carrying case and a booklet with all the codes and what they mean.

if you go on ebay just type in "engine code reader" and you'll find like 500 of them. My 350Z and my wife's Jetta both had CEL's on so we used this to remove the CEL and find out what the problem was.

Cuz it takes a whole day at the VW dealership for my wife as well! And I was like hell no I'll do it myself!

Do you have testpipes? Dont remove it if you dont know what the code is. Let the dealer see it

nope, no test pipes. I'm thinking its either an exhaust leak(my exhaust was recently installed by some ghetto shop), or something relating to my intakes, or possibly i finally get a CEL for a misfiring problem that has not been able to be solved by the dealer. So i'm really crossing my fingers that this is a good thing.
