Default laws concerning TINT and PLATES

will be moving from Seattle to San Diego next week... i have tinted windows 20% all around... i heard that in CA you're not allowed to have tinted windows in front... and if so, anyone recommend a place to get it removed in North County area?... also, are front plates mandatory down there?

thanks

No joke, you better have a front plate/no front tint on your way to SD or your get a ref ticket from CHP. Those 2 is always what they look for to pull you over...

According to this, you can have a 70% tint. Which ain't much. I've got 50 on my windshield and you can't even tell it's tinted.

I have been tinted and plate free for years. Have one window tint ticket and thats after getting pulled over for a stop sign, he only ticketed me for the tint. Just leave it on.

Yeah, unfortunately you have to have a front license plate in CA, AND you can't have your front side windows tinted.. I've gotten lucky, I've only gotten a warning for front window tint... I see the cop all the time down my block, and he was actually cool about it... he just warned me that i had to take it off (which most cops wont do, they'd rather give you a ticket) I can't say I was lucky with my front plate situation.. I actually got a ticket from a Meter Maid in Hollywood (who would've thought a meter maid could ticket you for this)... Just put the plate on, and I guess google local tint shops in SD county. Hope you like California.

i say keep your tint and your plate off until you get a ticket. it's gonna cost you the same anyway to get the tint off now, as it will if/when you get a ticket, so you might as well enjoy it. a fix-it ticket for the front plate is simple enough to "fix".. all you need zip-ties or the z-bracket or a homemade bracket that you can put together for a few dollars worth of home depot supplies, and like half an hour of your time at the police station to sign it off. usually costs $10, an administration/paperwork fee.

just my two cents..

Can I put after-market tinting on the windows of my vehicle?

The main requirements for legal window tinting in California are:

  1. The windshield and front driver's side and passenger's side windows cannot receive any aftermarket tinting.
  2. If the rear window of a vehicle is tinted, the vehicle must have outside rearview mirrors on both sides.

The law prohibits any person from driving any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows, with certain limited exceptions.

However, legislation signed into law effective January 1, 1999, exempts from the above prohibition specified clear, colorless, and transparent material that is installed, affixed, or applied to the front driver and passenger side windows for the specific purpose of reducing ultraviolet rays. If, as, or when this material becomes torn, bubbled or otherwise worn, it must be removed or replaced.

Just a word of advice, never trust a site that mentions the law unless it is an official state or federal government web site.

Like Naeiri said leave the car be until you get either violation ticket.

Some people, like me, are lucky and don't get caught for tinted windows once.

Some people, like me, are not so lucky and receive no-plate ticket like once a week LOL
I have received 6 so far and there is NO WAY in hell I'm putting the plate back on!

I've been lucky so far with no front plate and intercooler fully exposed with tint. I did get stopped for a modified exhaust by the CHP and he even went as far as opening the hood. I was lucky but then I full cooperated with the trooper. I drove away with a warning on that one.

I live right next to GG PD and I run into cops all the time. Never gotten any hassle for no front plate, tint, or loud exhaust.

if ur state doesnt give u 2 plates for ur car...then u can leave the front off...when u register with california...they give u 2 plates so u need both of them on...so i wouldnt worry about it if u have out of state plates...as for tint...yes u can get a ticket for that...

I'd put your front plate on but leave the tint. You'd be amazed how many people have limo tint around here. Unless you draw attention to yourself you'll probably be fine.

I've got 35% all around which isn't bad compared to alot of cars. Typically the cops won't pull you over for tint. It's just something they'll add to your list of infractions once they have you over. Same for the front plate. Most people get the front plate fixit when they've already been pulled over for something else.
