Default any helpful advice on selecting a portable GPS?

For this year's Christmas, I decided to get my parents a portable GPS. Looking to spend no more than $300. They definitely won't need a top-of-the-line unit.. Even an entry-level one should be good enough, as long as it has basic functions, a fairly large viewing area, and is user-friendly.

I've done a good amount of research and spoke to a handful of people about their personal experiences, and from the information I've gathered, I'll most likely be going with a Garmin or a TomTom. However, I'm open to other brands, so if you have any suggestions or personal experiences, please share!

If you happen to have any links, that would help a lot too. Thanks guys!

If you know what you're doing, you can download the updates for free off the net.

I can give you one of the top of the line Magellan 1430 for like 150$... no box though... pretty much new. maybe I can even give you one with lifetime traffic updates. These aren't used by me, I have friends working with Magellan and they sample some units then just toss them away. (I take it and sell it )

But anyways, I like Garmin Nuvi the best. Looks good and easy to use. Magellans has just stepped up their game IMO. User friendly..

I'll pass on the open box stuff Tony, I know a few people that offer me that **** all the time .

I've heard a lot of crappy stories about Magellans, which Garmin Nuvi would you recommend?

Get a garmin jon. I got mine back when it was pricey, but now they can be had for under 300.. many places have rebates too.
costco has 100 dollar rebate for a garmin 750 (higher end model)
http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product...lang=en-US&s=1
or you can just buy the cheap older 250 for like 149.99 or something..
i have a 650, which is not as new as the 750 and it works great... 750 can only be better, and wider screen too

I'm using garmin nuvi 200. It's cheap and easy to use, not bad for an entry level gps.

hey jon,
dont go to staples, the price is outrageous.

i got my garmin nuvi 260w at FRYs for something like 200.00

works well, and is the widescreen. my dad uses it sometimes, so its pretty decent for the "older" eyes. i bought it a while ago in july, so it may even be cheaper.

MIO is underrated. I have an older model and it's great.

I recently picked up a Garmin Nuvi 750 and it works great. Got it from QVC for something around $260.
