Anyone here use radar detectors?
Curious i see them all the time on other peoples car but i have heard horror stories of people getting worse tickets when being pulled over. Last rumor i heard was someone getting pulled over for speeding and then getting ticket for racing since he had a radar detector.....
Anyways my GF wants one but i dont know the scoop on them. Is it possible to install them in the front bumper or hidden somewhere lol.
I think they are illegal in CA but i see them everywhere so hmmmmmm.

if that's the case, the officer is a d1ck. lol.. radar detectors are not illegal. they even sell them at costco. i think you just can't mount anything on your front windshield. that's illegal.
there are some stealth ways to have them.. I know you can do the V1 mirror deal or there is a beltronics system that looked like you could put the components anywhere without a bulky unit out in the open. there are probably other ways.
I'm fine with having mine hanging from the rearview mirror. if you get pulled over you should just assume you are getting a ticket anyways - they aren't going to give you a worse charge because of the radar detector, but they would probably be less likely to let you go.

look, seriously, i have friends that are local cops/chp's. if you are in the city driving around, they usually just pace you and see how fast your going. defeats the purpose of a radar detector. if they are sitting still and using a radar gun on you, they know you're speeding before you even see them, or you will see them way before they have the radar gun on you.
i only see the need for a radar detector for long road trips where you don't really pay attention to what's on the side of the road. saved my *** a few times going up to mammoth for snowboarding. unless you just like the little flashing red lights from the detector unit going off once in a while?
how fast does your gf plan to drive? what does she drive? tell her *** to slow down... that's the best way to go bro. hahhaa.

^^^ hahah hilarious, she drives a Scion TC and she does drive fast, especially my car..... She mentioned wanting one awhile ago and i was going to get one for her for the bday next week. I didnt ask why since i wanted to surprise her, i think im leaning towards getting her car tinted instead, front will be illegal but im sure she can charm her way out of a ticket. I dont see a need for a radar detector personally.

Go with a Valentine One, that's what I use, and I actually mount it on the top of my windshield. I ran the wiring through the roof panel and down through the side panels to the AC outlet.
Mounting things such as this on the windshield is NOT illegal as long as you have it no lower than a certian amount (not sure how many inches, but there is usually mark on the glass to let you know.
In CA these are not illegal, however radar jamers are illigal to use, not to sell.

depending on the state, they may be illegal...radar jammers are illegal in all states...
as for officers giving worse tickets if you have one, think of it this way...if they are trying to enforce something and you are trying to find a way to be able to speed when they arent around, and still get caught, dont expect any breaks...they will make the charge the maximum possible charge to show their appreciation...

Brother in law is CHP, and I asked him, radar detectors are not illegal, but radar jammers are.
CHP's don't use radar very often, mostly use pacing. (following)
City cops use radar alot, often hidden behind signs, cars, buildings.
If the unseen cop radars cars well in front of you, you will be alerted to slow down, likely in time. If they hit you first, then its probably too late. Your really just hoping to pick up the radar they are using on the cars well in front of you.
The cop won't be happy to see a radar detector in your car.
The latest Escort radar detector seems to win most every test published in tech and car magazines.

Well i didnt get the radar, my gf got her windows tinted instead and she is crazy happy. But this conversation is interesting. So cops do not like radar detectors and highway patrol pace instead? I havent been pulled over in many years (knock on wood) but i thought that without proof via radar that you were indeed speeding that "going with the flow of traffic" wins in court?
Im probably wrong but i thought that was true.
And whats the deal with hiding, i heard long time ago they were not allowed to "hide" in CA. Probably wrong on this too, but they hide all the time on the freeway lol.
