Default LA Vacation Ideas

I am working in the Mojave area for a couple of weeks in a row and decided to hang out in LA for a long weekend (April 22-25) instead of flying all the way back to NC. Right now I am trying to book a hotel and am not sure the areas to look for or to avoid. Something with a Hilton or Marriott would be ideal. Also any advice on things to see/do in the area would be greatly appreciated. I am more into sightseeing or anything that requires minimal sweating.

Keep in mind that I am a touristy looking east coast guy, so no suggestions that have me wearing a blue shirt and staying at the Motel 6 in Compton!
