Default Oil Consumption

Hey Fellas, I was just reading another post in the general 350 Z forums, and there are apparently a lot of Z owners experiencing the same problem i have just realized after 8k miles on my new 06 Z. The motor seems to be buring oil between oil changes, a lot might i add. I've never noticed more than 1/2 a quart of oil being burned or missing with no leaks between oil changes, the first oil change i had 2 quarts missing, the second oil change 2 quarts missing as well. I'm concenred about this, b/c i dont want a car i have to keep adding oil to it.

Anyone having this same issue please let me know.

This seems to be an issue. After reading some of these posts, I decided to check mine today. 3000 miles since my oil change and the level barely reads on the stick. Just makes it do the first curve. That would mean that I have gone through all the oil in 3000. Obviously not normal. Taking it in first thing Tuesday. I am hoping that it was just an error that was made when they did the oil change, but reading the posts it seems unlikely. Many people have thought the same thing. The interesting thing is that it seems that 06s have this problem the most.

It nots a uncommon, with syntheic oils,
most cases you'll lose a 1/2 quart within 500miles of a oil change, it should however level off and not continue to lose oil.
There hasnt been to my knowledge a for sure answer most agree it has something to do with the brand of the oil. You may consider changing brands.

I use mobil full synthetic 5w-30, lose around 1/4 quart within 500 miles, then it stops burning oil, with minor oil losses when the engine is keep at high rpms and used to brake.

When I change my own oil and fill it to about 3/4 height on the dipstick it loses oil til it marks slighty below half mark.
Shops in most cases only fill to slighty below half, and oil burn will leave you not marking, watch out for this.
but if your losing large amount of oil you should have checked out

I use mobil one 5-30 as well, and i make sure that its full everytime i do my own oil change, but the last two times which is the first two ooil changes i've done on my car, it was missing 2 quarts.

I just talked to my frinend thats a Honda master tech, and toyota master tech, and he said this is normal for some motors and some manufacturers. He said its just poor designe on the pistions rings, they are not as tight as they need to be for one, two he said its common for high rev high compressions motors, and two the only way to stop this is to completely rebuild the motor (blue printing it ).

A lot of people on this forum are freaked about it, especially with the 06's but after talking to my firend and him telling me its normal, for the motor and the manufacturer, i'm just going to keep adding oil in between oil changes. he said there will be no detremenal problems with the motor b/c if burns 2 quarts between oil changes, as long asa you fill it back up in between and dont let it run dry.

I forgot to mention the first few times I switch to mobil 1 it burned alot of oil quickly, I believe around the 3rd or 4th oil change it leveled off as I mention before. I read some full sync oils take awhile for the engine to get "used to it"

Am no expert on motors but I disagree with the poor piston ring design, and dont think specing the engine would solve the problem. I think all comes down to high rev, high compression after all its a 3.5l V6 putting out V8 numbers .

I also have a 2001 audi s4 its a 2.7l v6 with 442hp it burns mobil 1 oil about a 1.5quarts between changes. Its been rebuilt about 6 months of ago, the oil lose just comes from the high reving and engine braking, and the turbos burn a small amount of oil naturally. It appears to be burning less oil as time goes on

I would keep a eye on it and see if oil consumption reduces after more oil changes, it should lose no more then 1/2 quart afterwards.

I wouldnt worry to much about it, since you got along time on the warranty and for the most part this appears common

I'm curious, that 1/2 quart that you're talking about dissapearing in the first 500 miles after an oil change, is probably the oil filling up the new/empty oil filter, which holds 1/2 quart I believe?

Which would actually happen within probably a few seconds after starting the car up?

Why else would a car loose 1/2 a quart the first 500 miles after an oil change, then stop?

thats what I thought at first but it does take around 500miles for it to happen, also the oil filter is too small to hold that amount

Very good points....your are right but your buddy forgot to mention one thing. BREAK-IN. If you break in your motor via the owners manual specs, then you'll have this problem. You have to do alot of heavy acceleration and deceleration to set the rings correctly. You can't do this driving under 4k rpms and driving like grandma. Break her in hard constantly changing your speed by accelerating and then letting the engine bring the rpms back down without using the break. Your rings will set and you won't burn oil. That simple. Synthetics do this more than any other oil...if you're burning too much, switch to dinosaur oil.

I just got my 1st Royal Purple fluid change at CarBoy. $15 for labor and its about $6 something per quart. Oh and of course the filter... I just went there because the cost was fair and they stock it in store.
