Default Gauging Interest Level for a Drag Race Tournament

I think it'll be fun to have some sort of a tournament type event. I see so many people modifying their cars, but nobody who will do any sort of racing to prove that their mods are even worth the price that they paid. Why modify for more power if you don't know whether or not it actually made any gains? Prove that your performance mods are actually doing something rather than just looking pretty on your car just begging to be used. Plus, it's a good way to hang out with the local and fellow automotive enthusiasts.

Drag racing is an easy and fun way to see how your car is doing with its mods. Of course, there's some skill involved in drag racing, but I promise it's easy. After all, it's just driving in a straight line, right?

Unsurprisingly, it wouldn't be fair for most people if we ran heads up for obvious reasons, so it'll have to be a bracket race. What that essentially means that everybody will dial in (choose a time they think they can run) and try to run that time. Whoever runs closer to their dial in will advance to the next round to face the other winners. However, you cannot redlight (leave the launch pad before the green light) or break out (run faster than the dial in).

I can and will set up the entire tournament tree at the day of the event and may even handle the tree itself as far as advancing the winners. This event will not be limited to just Z/Gs, but open to all. We can decide when to have this event in this thread, but I think sometime in August, September, or October is good since that'll give all of us enough time to plan ahead - no excuses.

Lastly, no tournament/competition would be worthwhile without some sort of a prize or an incentive. Note that this means that there will be a small entry fee (TBD). However, the entry fee, which will have to be paid in full in advance, will go toward either a small trophy of some sort or a gift card or whatever else we may choose as the prize(s).

So.... what do you think?

i think most people around here would rather have a "whose car is prettier and shinier" contest.

If I'm in town I want to do it. Glad it's not heads up so I have a chance.

I'm serious about this.

Anybody know of a forum where I can actually get people to participate on local events?

We can set this up ourselves. We don't need the track's help to do this. Trust me.

I think this might be a start.

www.dfwautoclub.com

I know from the BMW community that they do a fair bit of air strip rental, etc. Seems like a cool group.

Sweet. Thanks for your help. I'll look into that forum and register there to gauge their interest level.

BTW, I just noticed that you're no longer stock. I had really hoped you, among a handful of people, would be the one to break 12s stock. Well, I guess 12s are a given and expected now for you.

I'm trying to chipmunk away funds to build a 10 second E36 in my future.

I'd love to see that. Please tell me you'll keep this forum updated with your project. I've been in a few cars that ran 10s or faster, but I've never driven one. I can't even fathom what that must be like.

What will become of your Z then with such a project car in the back of your mind at all times?

Depends. It would be a 3.0 turbo E36 sedan. Looking for the car now, have a block and head of my friends. I can get parts cheap because of some connections, and I have a 20 psi tune for that engine with a GT35 already

Too easy to boost it, I just can't afford the full build and my Z right now, so I'm trying to build up some money to get the E36, and keep the Z.

Wow, I wish I had connections like yours.

Just thinking about your future project makes me

That sounds interesting Chris, if i didnt need a clutch right now i'd be in... i'll still go if that's cool...

Bracket racing is a good choice, it makes it fair for everyone as you have to be good at being consistent.

Need more people to join up!

Awesome. Good to see some more interest in this.

Once we get more people interested, I will try to set up a date (I'm shooting for sometime in September or October). We don't need to track people involved, but I'll let them know so they can cater to our needs a little.

Depending on the amount of interest, the below will change:
-1st place prize
-2nd place prize
-non-refundable deposit (incentive to not skip this event once committed)
-tournament tree

Depending on where and when I might be interested. NASA schedule comes first. Haven't drag raced the Z in a couple years now and kinda curious what it could run in it's current form.
I'd definitely be down for a time trial/time attack event though!
