Default Tuning question: Ignition timing

I have read all I can get my hands on regarding tuning before I get a UTEC, but I had one last question: How do you figure what your ignition timing should be? I have logs of the timing my car is using now, but how do I how how much to advance or retard it?
Thanks for any assistance.

I had mine advanced to almost 5 degrees in some spots. With the timing this far advanced it did not make more power. You are better off just advancing around 2 degrees. But like everyone says on here, all cars are different. It depends on the mods you have. What i would do is do atleast 3 different maps before you go to the dyno. That way you can switch between the different maps to see what your car likes. That is what worked for me this past weekend.
