Arrow Reflash using a Nissan scanner ?!?

a friend of mine took his 2005 Z to nissan to install his Popcharger and test pipes...
The guy there told him that he can raflash his ECU using a scanner they have...
Took him like 5 min without even driving the car, and my friend told me that he did feel the diff...

Is it possible to tune ur Stock ECU using a scanner ? i mean its a diagnostic tool...
what do you guys think ?

Cheers!

He probably advanced the timing a couple of degrees, that you can do!!!!!!!!!!! but i dont know of anything else. my tech did that to mine with the consult II, but i have to run 93 octane, otherwise the computer would retard the timing back(knock sensor you know). you do feel the difference though.

Resetting the ECU doesn't change the settings the ECU was flashed to.

Sooo anytime u make any ECU changes wether it be idle speed or timing advances with either a Consult or Cipher u are actually flashing the ECU?

If the ECU needs to be flashed that leads me to believe that its a EEPROM sorta like a bios chip on a motherboard for a computer. Pulling the power on the chip for however long will not change its program.

Or pulling the power on it could could erase and changed settings is my other guess.

I wouldn't really call it a reflash as all you're doing is changing a few base parameters (idle speed, ign timing, etc). Technically it could be considered a 'reflash', but most wouldn't.

For the OP's story there could've been an updated ECM program out for his car, but you can't really do much at all with the CONSULT-II beyond diagnostics (spent almost a whole day playing around with the thing back when I first started working at Nissan). Certainly no tuning performance-wise.

And correct, any changes you make to the ECM will not be lost if it loses power. Think of it as a flash drive of sorts.
