Pre-Tune A/F Question
I just finished rebuilding my motor. I used quite a bit of parts the ECU had never been run with and I'm noticing that it smells ultra rich. My question is how far out would you expect the following setup to be pre-tune. I'm currently getting around 15 mpg.
Eagle Rods
Weisco 11:1 pistons .20 over
3 Angle Cut
Balanced Assembly
Mishimoto Oil Cooler
Mishimoto Radiator
K&N Drop in
Motordyne 5/16 Spacer
Megan Headers
Jim Wolf Flywheel
Kinetics HFC
M2 Exhaust

what engine management? what size injectors?
you'll get more smell from hfc or test pipes without it being "rich" just because of the extra flow out the rear.
with the money invested a 200$ wideband would be a must. i think there is a pair of innovate lc-1's for sale on here at 150$ a piece which is a steal. They even come with the programable gauge. I would get one (i run innovate widebands)

A tune is comming, but I haven't even put 100 miles on the break-in yet. And it has stock injectors and management. I plan to dyno and tune it after about 500 miles maybe 1000, but I was wondering if this seemed a bit too far out of whack for the mods listed. If this sound normal before a re-tune I'll just wait till the tune is done, but if not I have to start troubleshooting.
well it's hard to say by just what you think it smells.
Like i said, you need a wideband. It's almost a given if you have a modified engine. With hfc's you'll have more smell than before so that doesn't mean it's rich. styaing low rpm low throttle should keep the car in safe afr. "should" being the key word.
you don't have to have it tuned to put a wideband gauge on it.

Being that it is stock computer and injectors, I wouldn't expect it to be waay far off... but, you are running a freshly built motor untuned? The first bit of time a new engine runs can be critical to it's long term performance. Too rich can bad things can happen. Get a wideband, and a TUNE.
Thanks guys, I'll take that into consideration, but first I'm finding there may be a problem with one of the cats. I might have hurt one when I was troubleshooting a couple of dead cylniders that turned out to be a incorrectly connected harnes wire. I'll post when I confirm.

After the install of the working cats the engine runs much better and no longer exhibits the problems I was referring to earlier. I'm setting up a tune now but I'm still a little up in the air with which shop to go to. Have you guys had good expriences with anyone in particular (So Cal)?
