Beginner tuner with questions
So I want to tune my Z and I know I have a lot to learn and I'll definitely be taking it slow and cautious but for now I just have some questions on what equipment I should buy. Right now I'm debating between Uprev or Haltech. Uprev seems like the most popular with the most support information but Haltech seems to give you much more options and control. I'm also confused what I need as far as wideband afr. I have an 03 Z which I understand doesn't come with wideband o2 so I'm guessing for either of these applications I would need to purchase wideband sensors, is this correct? Thanks for any advice and I did search for these answers which like I said I can find a lot of information on Uprev but not much for Haltech, if anyone could direct me to information on a Haltech that would be appreciated.
I would highly recommend sticking with UpRev once you've completed your NA mods. As far as Wideband goes, AEM Wideband UEGO seems to be top on the list as well as the Innovate series.
For tuning aspects I highly suggest getting a professional (either mail in or Tuned). From what I’ve learned so far this isn't something you want to just play around with. Have a professional deal with it and practice on something you don't want to blow up

My power mods right now are kn drop in, 5/16 copper ISO thermal spacer, ART pipes; I hope to get a motordyne tdx soon. With those mods I want to just get a tune and stay like that for a while since anything past those mods I'm mostly looking at FI or going inside the engine with cams and what not. As far as experience I haven't really tuned before, I've helped with some tunes and I have a I guess decent knowledge of what's going on with the car and ECU. Of course I have much more to learn which is why I would like to do part of any tuning myself so I can learn. I plan to have a professional at least get me a base tune and maybe I can just dial it in. I always planned going with Uprev but I've been seeing some used Haltech for pretty close to what Uprev costs to the point that if it were to be better for me I wouldn't mind spending that money. Also doesn't Uprev only support innovate wideband? If they support AEM that'd be great I have one from my old car, would probably need a second sensor but still something.
you may want to start with Uprev and see how that works for you. It'll be plenty of capacity to tune your NA applications and your FI aspirations. Haltech has more capabilities but thats a double edge sword - that much more to learn and/or break. so after you get good with uprev, sell it and look into the haltech setup. Haltech will be more expensive all around...
As far as learning goes, find a tuner in your area who would make a good teacher and 'hire' them to tune your car and teach you what they are doing. See what their hourly rate is and offer up cash to teach you the tuner. Don't expect anyone to do it for free or for beer...cash talks...

I was sort of thinking the same thing, go with Uprev just because it seems more simple but, if what midz350 is saying is true then Haltech is sounding better. It would also be nice to learn Haltech since it is a more widely used software unlike Uprev. Either way once I decide on a system I will do plenty of research on the subject. I'm quite good at learning new skills just by using internet research; I believe I already have a decent foundation going I just need to get the actual tool to start putting pen to paper.

Uprev will do everything you need it to. I've been running it on my stroked, TT, 650 whp car for over two years now. No issues. I also used it on my NA build prior to that.
For an NA car with boltons ABSOLUTELY no reason to use a haltech.. Uprev can do all you want and more.. and the software isn't that difficult to use at all as long as you have someone give you pointers
Go uprev with the innovate mtx-l wideband. All you'll need is a serial to usb cable to plug the wideband into your laptop and connect the wideband through uprev. They support innovate products only and it'll put all your wideband logs into your regualr logs. My two cents. I love uprev, its a great way to learn tuning for a beginner.
UTEC + LC-1. You can get both for around $450 then there are programs that sync both together (jeffs software UTI-ME I think it's called)
Or you can get the turboxs wideband controller and sync both right in hyperterminal...I haven't tried this option yet, but there is an "auto_tune" feature in using this method

So I've pretty much been sold on Uprev. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions coming up but one that I am caught on now is the issue of wideband afr. As I said I have an 03 so I will need to buy an aftermarket wideband, which it seems innovate is the only way to go. With that do I need two sensors and where will they be placed (are they able to replace any of the factory ones or will bungs be added). Again not sure if it matters but I gave ART V3 pipes.
i have a 06 revup with few boltons and i'm interested in the uprev, do i also need the wideband gauge and sensor?
Does the sensor replaces any of the others?
Thanks for the answers in advance

My source: In the process of getting my 03 tuned
so i just need to buy the uprev and i'm good to go with tuning? There'e no need for the gauge or something else to monitor the measurements?
