Default 2007 VQ35HR Engine Oil Analysis *UPDATED 5/15/08*

Sending in a sample today to Blackstone. Anyone else going to be doing oil tests? I'm very curious to see the results.

The oil used for this first analysis is Royal Purple 5w-30. I already changed the oil and put in Mobil 1 5w-30 and ill be using that for the next 3 oil changes and then doing a test. Any suggestions on another brand to use next time? I'm open for opinions as I am pretty much up in the air at this point on which oil to use.

I have 1,147 miles on my 07 and I'm going to change the oil at 1,500...I'm going to put Castrol GTX 5w-30 (conventional oil) in. Once I reach 3,000 I guess I'll switch to Castrol Syntec 5w-30....

based upon resolutes thread, the motul 300v and motul 8100 are actually not that great for Daily driven cars.. at least for the vq35de.. I don't know about the HR until people actually do an oil analysis. I'm running motul 8100 5w30 eco-tech now, but i probally will switch to mobil 0w-40. Last I checked it is still a group IV synthetic, and i've seen many oil analysis come back good for the 0w-40. even on other cars. i use to be on e46fanatics.com, and I gave my e46 0w-40 all day. Ran like a champ..

i can see doing an oil analysis on a certain oil, but changing brand every oil change , in my opinion, will not give an accurate results. i believe there will be a to much of an oil "mix" since not all of the oil is drained.

Also, I am sure that the result will differ on a fully broken-in engine. So wait till you are at like 5k, befor doing this “study “

Motul 300v here, and I’ll stick with it. By the time I get to 50k, I’ll be in a new car anyway, so why stress. I could even go dyno oil…. ( but my engine would run like crap and be loud as chit )

I have 17K on my 07, would you consider that broken in?

And I've run Royal Purple for the past 4 oil changes. I'm going to run mobil 1 for the next three, and then do another test. I guess I should have been more clear on that, "next time"-meaning next time I choose another brand and send in a test.

I've heard that you should run a new car on conventional oil forthe first 2 oil changes / 5-6k mile miles, before switching to full synthetic. Supposedly Synthetic doesn't 'bond' as well as conventional oil to metal parts.

At the same time, I understand that BMW's come w/ Mobil 1 from the factory.

Can anyone help me understand why there is this difference? I'm at about 1400 miles now and I'm looking to change my oil soon.

I changed my oil to amsoil 2000 0w30 at 1251mi. I am at 3000 or so now. I plan to change my oil and send in for a analysis at around 4500-5000. I will also have some track miles on the car by then.

It actually wasn't too bad. Of course the oil is dirty, but like another member on this forum I wanted to switch to synthetic asap. Putting in the Amsoil TSO 2000 0w30 was more piece of mind than anything. Since the oil change i made sure to keep a close eye on the oil level. So far no burning oil issues. Of cours, after the change I have been driving my a as it was meant to be driven. The oil filter I used was k&n's with a filter magnet on it. That will probably affect the analysis a bit but we will see. I plan on sending an oil analysis every oil change on this car. In any case I plan to track this car as much as I can so I will probably change my oil sooner than later.

Looks a lot better than the same oil in a DE engine does. Interesting that BL uses the DE averages in your report. I wonder if they know the HR is an 80% different engine. The larger journals should help reduce wear numbers of lead and copper over the rediculously hard wearing DE engine. I have seen very few engines chew up an oil like the DE does. At this point would say your break-in metals are out of the system, so this is an accurate report on the oil's performance. I don't expect the M1 5W-30 to be any better, but we'll see.

Thanks for posting the report. If you want to post your next UOA the next oil change, it's fine. Your trends will not be affected by the minor amount of residual from the previous oil. If the M1 is working better, it will show. if it's not, it will show. As an example, Shushiakary switched from Motul 300V to Amsoil TSO and his Amsoil wear results reflected the same results as six other Amsoil TSO UOA's from DE engines. The only time I would run a cleaner or high detergent oil between oil changes to prevent a previous oil from affecting the new blend is if the prior oil was a POE base. Polyolesters don't mix well with PAO's. This is not the case here.

I guess it's about time I made a comparison chart for the HR engine in the Oil Analysis sticky.
