Default Serpentine Belt Owned!

Well I poped my hood to show my buddies my intake. Low and behold I see a rats nest of strings. Im thinking WTF. So I look around and see my belt half of its width and almost down to its last thread. IDK what happend to cause this. Its a 07 with no more than 8200 miles on it. Im planning on taking it to the dealership later today, but when i spoke to them earlier on the phone, they might not cover it cause belts are a wear item. this isnt wear at all, its defected. Ill post later to show the outcome.

I would bitchslap someone until they replaced it for free.

I had my belts replaced for free on my G and was at 25k miles.

You dont have a serpertine belt, you have a timing chain. That wont go bad. The belts your describing are your drive belts and should be rated for ATLEAST 20k miles. I got 30k out of mine before my a/c belt frayed.

we do have serpentine belts. He didn't say a timing belt.

Serpentine belt drives single or multiple pulleys. It's called serpentine because of the way it snakes around the pulleys.

indeed you are correct. For some reason timing belt popped into my head. Changing belts is a sinch. loosen the belt tensioner ( a screw) pull the belts off, put new belts on pullies and tighten the tensioners back down checking the snugness of the belts after each couple turns.

Takes longer to get the car on jack stands, and the plastic undercarriage removed then it will take to swap the belts. It's everything in between that is time consuming.

yeah, it's very easy. I'm glad it's so easy on this car. I have done some cars where it wasn't so easy.

to the OP. Are you sure you didnt screw up your intake install and get something too close to the belts?
Id bet on that alot quicker then I would bet on a deffective belt.

SuperBlack350z, didn't you have a problem with your serp belt constantly breaking? Did you ever figure out what was causing the problem?

yes, Nissan has been giving me the wrong belts this whole time.. . The service/parts guy said it was about 1-2 inch longer than the one I needed and he said i was maxing out my tensioner bolt each time which was still semi loose all the way tightened. They have refunded me all of the money i have spent on belts there (a bit over 100 dollars).

I installed that intake back in august, plus it is no where near the belts at all.

I am one more occurence away from a lemon law with my situation. I had the belt that controls the power steering fray and break 3 times now. The 1st 2 times I got lucky and wasnt turning when it happened, the 3rd time I wasnt so lucky. I was exiting the highwa on a ramp and i lost power steering mid turn, almost went rigt over the curb and on to the other ramp into oncoming traffic. I told them that I do not feel comfortable driving this car anymore and that I know plenty of people with this car that dont have these problems. They said they will see what they can do to correct the problem and that if it happens again they will be giving me a brand new Z.

4300 miles and mine's toast. Looks like a pulley wasn't alligned right or something and the belt started to work it's way off. It was chewed up on the sides, the ribs were separating from the back of the belt and the stitching was tearing apart.

I don't know how long it's been wearing out, but if it wasn't for that that string sitting on top of my engine cover when I popped the hood, I might not have been able to get it to the dealership without issue.
