Default RPI Intake Scoops

It seems like a simple concept and design. These scoops are suppose to have a ram air type effect and help direct air flow into the intakes. http://www.raceprecision.com/php/index.php/products

This product looks to be catching on in the BMW world with proven gains of around 10whp on M5s and M6s. Different cars of course, but it seems simple enough so I was wondering if it could be applied to our cars.

They don't currently have products for 350Zs. I'm not familiar with the intake ducting on the HRs, so not sure if it's compatible or if the kidney grilles on BMWs are a necessity to make it work. What do you guys think?

Here are a few pics.

So do you guys think this product is compatible with a Z? Or is just the same thing as a Varis intake duct?

I emailed them asking if they think it would be compatible. I sent pictures of the Z, but Eloy at race precision said that he would need to see it in person and look at the intake ducting to know if it would work.

He mentioned that he would be happy to look at a Z, but he also mentioned that he would need someone with a "stock" bumper. I have the NISMO model, so I guess they would want to test fit on the more common bumper. He's located in socal if anyone is interested.

With tools and a torch you can make damn near anything work.

Yea my buddy just got this on his M coupe, it actually makes a difference imo, i mean yea its just a butt dyno but that thing really does pull harder, especially at higher speeds. I might contact them and take my car there, its bone stock so well see.

I'm betting that if they used a curved scoop instead of the box there would be even more hp to be gained - air is not flowing very efficiently through that right-angle turn.

How are they measuring 10 hp from ram air effect on a dyno? I call BS on the #'s claims.

Here are some dynos on a M5. Second graph, the scoops were added.

Granted some of these dynos are not independent and are done by the manufacturer themselves, but if I got ~6-8whp from a $100 product, I'd be rather pleased.

But alas, they're not going to test fit on my car, so I've lost a bit of interest.

The only reason I have issue with this- is that its doing nothing more than using ram effect - the air restriction should be the same on a car that isn't moving. So I don't see how they pick up power on a dyno. I might be overly skeptical, but I also know that S series motors don't have a lot of power to be gained from breather mods unless its a "high performance" breather mod like a blower.

There is a similar duct on the Nismo V2 bumper. Unfortunately, it is only on one side!

That makes sense. Dyno fans are suppose to move a decent amount of air and are said to simulate air at some type of speed, but definitely is not the same as road conditions.

From this post, RPI states that the flow rate of their fan is 70mph at 8ft from the car. They also dyno with the hood closed, which might hurt dyno numbers overall, but then again should assist a product like this.

You should post this up on the M5board thread and see what they say.
