Exclamation HR Intake Experiment: AEM vs. Stock Airbox (w/ numbers)

While my car was on the dyno at AAM, we compared the two intakes.
AEM Dual Intakes vs. Stock Airboxes with stock filters.

AEM:RPMs were fluctuating at idle. This is why we took them out and installed the stock airboxes.
HP: The AEMS gain about 3-4 HP more than the stock airboxes above 3000 RPMS.

STOCK: Fluctuations decreased.
HP: Te stock boxes gain 1 hp over the AEMS under 3000 RPMs. After 3000, the hp curve flattens out and falls below the AEM curve.

The one thing to really consider is the AEMs get VERY hot after long driving since they are aluminum... The stockers are plastic and this helps so much for heat soak. With K&N drop ins, the air flow should be a little less restricted.

So do I want sound and couple more hp? or do i want colder engine bay temperatures and less hp... Who knows? I am sticking with the stockers though.

Just thought i would share that with everybody since a lot of people are still hung up stock VS aftermarket intakes for the HR.

Interesting. Dyno numbers increased, but I wonder if we would see even more of an increase or a more sustained increase when the car is actually moving and air is free flowing?

I want to buy intakes for my car so badly but I dont want to LOSE power. I dont care about not gaining or gaining very little.

From this, it does not look like the AEMs loose power. Only in the low end spectrum.

Intakes should be removed from the aftermarket.

I say that because I had countless issues with the AEM intakes on my brother's RX8. I will never purchase another aftermarket intake ever again.

So because you had problems with a part, they are useless right?

I'm surprised you even dealt with an AEM intake. It seems everything people change on their car from OEM you don't like.

No, they are useless because they actually seem to hurt the performance rather than help.

If you look on stillen.com they have a short tube stillen intake that has a small metal piece that just conects the new air filters to the stock plastic pipes on the the motor and there said to give you about 6hp I'm not sure on the torque but it seems that with that you can still get the sound and maybe a little performance just a thought. There about $348.57 on sale on the site

Yeah, that might be worth more than other ones. But the reason i like the stocks is because of less heat soak and the intake of colder air as compared to the conical filters.

so instead of 500 you will pay 350 for a set of stillen intakes that CLAIM to give you 6 hp in the perfect condition on the perfect day...still not worth it man save your money...there are other threads on here that talk about the new injen intakes getting you 15 hp (source injen) but in reality ppl have dynoed them and only getting 4 hp on their best run think bout it

Lol. I guess I am in a way pro-OEM.

I am giving an honest opinion. I installed the intake myself on my brother's RX8, and I'll be honest, I enjoyed the new "swoooosh" sound for a few hundred miles. But then I would get stuck in Houston traffic, and the car would turn into a nightmare. Stalling, rough idle, wet filter, maintenance was a pain in the *** because the damn thing was located behind his front bumper.

Complete junk.

It is interesting but we have had one of these intakes on a fellow Z and he dynoed like 290ish with injen intakes and everything else bone stock and after a technosquare reflash he was around 301(visionz). Tadshi, technosquare's tuner, recommeneded to almost everyone with different aftermarket intakes to switch back to stock except for visionz and his injen dual intakes so that there is good news to me.
