Default Noob question concerning the VQ35HR

Ok here we go. Please try to understand my question before crucifying me! (I did search!)

Anyway, I've been lurking the forums for a while, and I might have an opportunity in the coming summer to get a 350z. I know of the differences between the DE and the HR motor (stronger internals, dual intakes etc..). It is very clear to me that the HR is a superior motor, but how does this new motor play out in in practice?

Meaning, is there a night-and-day difference between driving the 06 and the 07? Preferably I would like to wait for used 07s to become cheaper/more available, but if the difference is not ALL THAT, I might just pick up a 06.

Thanks, and I hope this topic hasn't been beaten to death.

Flame suit on, just in case.

Is there a night and day difference? not really, but the HR is still the superior engine. If you have the chance definetely get a 2007-2008 Z, and try and stay away from 06's.

Thanks for your response!

Why specifically the 06s? Are they more prone to oil consumption problems?

My understanding was that 06 is a "solid" year for 350z... but then again I know very little about them specifically.

'06 is the major year for oil consumption problems. The '05 is probably the best DE year, but if you've got the bucks, get the '07 or '08.

Agreed ^ I've had both the 06 and 07. HR FTW.

Hey doesn't look like you really need your flame suit today! If you can get an 07-08... Do it! I keep telling everyone that it is a BUYERS MARKET, if you have the cash or credit, just throw out a number... Start real low and stick your guns.... Good luck!

I had an '06 for since new for about 3 years w/ almost all the bolt ons ( exhaust, test pipes, plenum spacer, intake 4.08 gears, cusco LSD and a utec) and when i picked up my new 08 this past month ( which I owe less on it since the discounts and down payment. It was faster after about 100 miles of break-in. If your going to stay N/A def get an HR. If your going to go F/I get a DE/rev-up. The DE's have not only twin turbo opts ( which is the only F/I the HR's have ) but they have single turbo's and 3 different types of S/C. and engine management is def better suited in the DE...... That's why I got an '08 i had recently just got done TTing mine '06 and someone ran me off the road and I totaled it, I was only going about 35-40....

Welcome.

The procrastination game is a losing game. You can delay purchase of a DE motor in pursuit of a HR motor. When it time for the HR, then you can delay the HR for the 370Z. When its time for the 370Z, you can delay the 370Z for the...

The game never ends.

Yes. The cheat code is

Go buy a 350Z and stop worrying about the latest and the greatest.

I think you should also take into consideration what exactly you want to get out of the Z. I bought an 08 because I got an amazing deal on it and i wanted a new car with a full warranty that i did not have to do much to. I went from a 130hp civic the 306 hp 350Z, and have more than enough car for me to play with before i worry about needing to make it faster. But if my goal was to build the Z up and go crazy with it not caring about warranties and such then i would have gone with an older model for less that i could invest more into. just my .02 cents

Just look at the 1/4 mile times for each year.

Half a second difference for the member Veetec from 04 to an 07.

I have an 08 Nismo, my buddy has an 06 tour and I drove his the other day to drop it off at the body shop to get a buff. He asked me to test drive it a little bit cuz he feels some binding from first to second ( a little off base here). Anyway I feel a very big difference between the motors and he has some upgrades to the motor (headers, hfc's,cat back, intake, and spacer) not to mention that his car just feels alot looser and I don't know how to explain it the 07-08's just feel nicer! I forgot to mention that I have driven other 06's and 08's as well just a better built car is what I am getting at but then again it might just be in my head.

Haha, I have been lurking for a while now, yea. Thanks to everyone for their input. If I can afford a HR I will definitely do that.
