Sorry if this topic is beating a dead horse...I'm not looking for a in depth discussion on this vs that. Just looking for opinions on whether it's worth it for me to save for an '07.
Honestly, I think it depends on what you want to do with the car. Daily drive? Autox? Track? Drag race? Street race? Cruise? It does matter, at least that's my opinion. A DE with bolt-ons can make ~260whp. An HR with bolt-ons can make ~300whp, all things held approximately equal. An HR weighs at least 100# more than an equally-optioned early DE. My CHEAP DE weighs ~3060# and has 260whp, and can keep pace with a modded HRs and a modded 370, for example.
Don't forget, you're trying to compare a vehicle that was rated before the SAE horsepower certification standard took effect in 2007. A rating of 287 HP in 2003 would be closer to 270 horses by today's SAE standards. A SAE-certified 306 HP would have been something like to 320 horses prior to 2007. Therefore, you're looking at something closer to a 30+ horsepower gain from 2003 to 2007 with the HR engine.
I did not know that. And I always wondered why an engine with so much improvement from an engineering standpoint was only making 10-15 more hp... and why it felt like such a bigger difference than that.

Learn something new every day, hmm.

This is the most important fact to consider. It's not just 300 vs 306 hp.

Completely false. Do not regurgitate this information any longer please.
I personally drive a 04 Touring... I mean really would I get rid of mine for a HR just for extra Hp.. Hell no. I do like other things about the newer 350's.. interior, hood, headlights/taillights.. but if you look at a complete package instead of just going fast.. you might want to consider a fully loaded older Z instead of a stripped newer one.
oh to add.. my old man just bought a 370 with the sport package.. the rear looks like Porsche Boxster.. and the front looks like a demented catfish with maxima headlights... nice interior, brakes, and wheels.. but thats about it.

My goal is to save for an '07 enthusiast or touring. You make a good point though and that is an option I'm considering.
He means better aftermarket support. I like my 03 touring quite a bit, and frankly I have no plans or inhibitions to switch to an HR (though it is a superior motor in stock form).
