VQ Frankenstein

VQ Frankenstein
This is a repost on a question asked in the regular 350z discussion. I am posting this question in the HR section. Does anyone know of someone using parts from other VQ engines? For instance the 3rd generation Pathfinder(05-08). This vehicle has 291 TQ and has a 92mm stroke. I know that GTM has stroker kits from 5K to 10K $. But the crank from this vehicle is $438, and bearings $10. From there it would be finding the right rod and piston combination that won't put the pistons thru the heads, but oem rods are cheap for instance the pathfinder rods are $75.

Lol, I was expecting this. It happened in the regular forum, everyone viewd it, nobody responded. I'm assuming this is an avenue no here has experimented with and/or knows anything about. It would be a great opportunity for us though. I don't have the funds to experiment, but you'd be surprised how many parts of the same series engine can be swapped.

You should check out Maxima.org, they have a lot of good reading on these types of swaps, though maybe not this one in particular. FYI, I've never been a fan of oversquare long stroke motors. Not in sports cars at least.

Thank you, I will. I had a honda accord before this Z, and the big rave for those j30 engines were to swap oem internals to term them into j35's or j36's. The end result was stock 244hp/211tq to 265hp/285tq. With a simple swap. I asked in this forum because the Z engine is a far superior engine that i thought would yeild better results.

you can also look around the site and search for j33, j35, j37. All of these builds with installation were 5k-6K because the parts were so cheap, 2k was the labor.

Thank you, KA24DE, I searched and found mostly people in older maximas droping VQ35 engines, but I did find this one that proves my point:

A VQ33 stroker, simply by droping vq 35 internals in a vq30 engine. Come on guys, is there a vendor here that maybe has the resources to experiment with this, if successful, think of how much money you can make.

After doing some more research, I am sure this would work with the DE series as they are variations of eachother. The crankshaft on the VQ40 is hollow and light-weight, which would not only be an advantage with the stroke, but for rotational mass. However, hr's had 80 percent of its internals re-designed to handle the increased rpm's. The questions are have the moldings in the short-block changed (making this impossible),does that only leave the crank, rods and pistons of the VQ37Vhr (Same bore with increased stroke), and if so, would the increase in compression and stroke be worth it?

Havent researched or tried this. Only way to find out is to test. Making rods and pistons to fit is the easy part. It's the crankshaft and associated clearance issues that might be a problem.

^Thank you guys for the input, I just wanted someone who has actually compared the cranks side by side. Like I said my gut feeling was that the vq40 would probably fit in the DE, slim chance for the hr's, and the vq37vhr's internals would fit in the hr's. This is all based on years of trial and error with the j series engines including parts from those engines in the suv's.

yes...the VQ40 can AND HAS been used as a stroker crank for the VQ35DE. The main journals of the crank have to be reduced in diameter to fit the smaller journals of the 35DE. Additionally, you will have to have the counter weights altered. None of this stuff is out of the ordinary for a competant crank grinder. Even with all the crank work needed, you should have alot less money into your crank as compared to buying an aftermarket stroker crank.
EDIT: just realized this is in the HR section of the forums. from what I recall, I think the VQ40 has the same main journal diameter as the VQ35HR engine.......but that is what I vaguely remember, not from any actual measurements I have taken.

I replied to your PM.....but in short, no there isn't anywhere to read up on this. It wasn't something ever put on the web. as far as specs and measurements, you can get some stuff in the factory service manuals, but other stuff, you just have to buy the parts.

^This is speculation, the blocks are the same in demensions, they have the same bore size, but higher stroke. I happen to think that it would fit like a glove, giving us an increase in stroke and compression. But I'm not a shop, I don't have the tools or the resources to find this stuff out for sure.
